I'm about to order a set of headers for my truck, and I'm 99 1/2% sure I don't have and EGR system.

Just to be sure, could someone who has (or knows what it is) an EGR system describe it to me? Not too much detail, just a brief description.

BTW, I do have an automatic tranny - at one time I heard that EGR was only on manual tranny trucks, but not sure if that is true.

Thanks,

I am not sure about the EGR only being on manuals, but there is an easy way to tell you if you have it or not. Look at the driver side of the engine. If you have a tube that runs from your exaust manifold up to your intake plenium, than you have the EGR system. If you do not have this tube than you don't have the EGR system. The only reason they need this information is so they know if they need to weld a fitting on your headers or not.

JAY is right about what the EGR system looks like. I'm not sure what kind of headers your going to get but JBA make a high-quality set that is emissions legal. They come with all the hardwear you need and a set of detailed intructions. I have them on my truck and I would recommend them to anyone.
P.S. Also look on the passenger side manifold, you might have a heat riser. It's a tube that goes from the out side of the manifold to the air intake. You may need to get a set of headers that has the fitting built in.

If your 1993 Ranger was actually manufactured in 1992, it may not have the Exhaust Gas Recirculation or EGR system. And perhaps pickup trucks were under different EPA requirements from Ford Explorers (EGR has to do with reduction in nitrogen oxide or NOx emissions) Pages 6-25 and 6-26 of the Haynes Ford Explorer Manual have a writeup on the Explorer EGR systems. My 91 Explorer does not have EGR. Mike in Seattle

Thanks for the replies - I don't have an EGR system.

My "California" truck was actually built in the July/August timeframe. It has some '94 truck characteristics - like the computer mounting location. In '93, they were behind the passenger kick panel (like the manual says) but on mine, it is under the steering column. Needless to say, this makes it a pain in the butt to get the computer out.

Thanks again,
