Pulled the codes on my 95 Explorer after the SEL came on. Got codes 332, 335, and 336 all related to EGR. Is it a no-brainer to just replace the EGR valve? It seems pretty accessible, shouldn't be too difficult to swap it out.

How much does the price run? I'm pretty sure mine does not have the DPFE.

TIA.

If you got a 4.0, you have a DPFE. And all those codes point to that. Been there, changed that. Shop around for a better than dealer price. I was under a time crunch and the dealer soaked me for @$80. If a NAPA, Autzone has it get it there. Easy to change, and reset your 'puter.

Thanks, kps

I have a 95 4.0 Eddie Bauer. The Haynes manual says that 95 and earlier and 96 5.0L V8 are equipped with PFE, thats why I assumed I didn't have it. Where would I look for the DPFE if I had it?

On mine, 95 also, it is on the drivers side on top of the intake manifold with 2 vacuum lines to the EGR tube (look in the Haynes for the EGR tube, that will show you). The EGR tube goes from the back of the engine to the EGR valve proper (UFO shaped). just before the Valve are the 2 vacuum lines. Follow those up to the DPFE 'plate' (about 2" x 4") and it has an electrical connection.
BEFORE you go get a new one, get the EXACT part number from the one that is on there, especially the last 2 letters (sh be AA or BB), as this determines the elec plug configuration. and make sure it comes with vacuum lines attached (mine became 'one' with the EGR tube and I had to cut them off).
make sure you reset the PCM after/during install.
good luck.

I've been through this and have a procedure to test it to be sure what it is...

The EGR system is pretty simple and here are the things it COULD be:

Carbon buildup in EGR passages (VERY likely)
Bad EGR Valve
Bad EVR Solenoid
BAD PFE/DPFE Sensor

You can verify the EVR by putting a vacuum gauge in-line between the EGR and EVR. When the engine is warm and you accelerate, you should see an increase in vacuum. If so, the EVR is OK as is any systems that control when to turn it on.

If you apply vacuum to the EGR at idle, the engine should stall. Also, the output voltage on the DPFE should go up. If both of these occur, then the parts are OK and carbon buildup is the culprit.

I have a procedure to clean the egr passages, etc that works very well. A little detailed to get into here, but email & I will send info..

I've seen lots of posts about this, but a code 332 is low egr flow. The ONLY things that will throw this code are blocked passages, bad evr or egr or bad pfe/dpfe. O2 sensors WILL NOT cause this code....

It is really a simple problem to fix, once you understand the egr system and follow a logical path. I know. I worked on it for 2 weeks following threads before I sat down & thought it through....
