I have a 99 v8 ex and it was throwing code P0401 which is an egr code and I changed out the dpfe sensor but when i was changing it i accidentally cut the white hose going into the EVR in half and didnt have any hose to fix it so i just electrical taped it back together for now. It was surging a bit before during acceleration which is why i put the new sensor in but now it seems like its surging worse but only in the two highest gears. could this be from the vacuum hose that i cut and the electrical tape just isnt sealing enough? any other thoughts would be awesome. oh and it also had a misfire on cylinder 2 but i changed the spark plugs and the ones i pulled out were horrible so they may have been the cause to the misfire. thanks for the help!

Yes, that hose should be pretty much air tight. Its a good idea to clean the carbon out of EGR valve. It sounds like the surging may be caused by the PCM thinking the valve is open when it isn't then trying to compensate.

Do you remove the EGR valve to clean it or do you run a liquid cleaner through it?

so your saying that the pcm is causing the surging because the egr valve may have a carbon build up so once it is cleaned the pcm will be fine and hopefully the surging will stop?

The EGR valve may be due for cleaning, and hopefully will help. I can't say for sure over the net, but I know that if the computer thinks that the EGR is open and its not (or vise versa) then it has erroneous data. I would be concerned with that vacuum hose first. When bad data gets into the PCM It makes an attempt to adapt.

When you are under a load like when you are in a higher gear, I believe the the EGR valve is supposed to close to reduce ping. It sounds like its short cycling or something.
