What exactly is an EGR Tube? Would a broken one cause a truck to run loud? How much would you expect to pay to have it replaced?

Thanks

EGR is exhaust gas recirculation. The system pumps some of your exhaust back into your engine (don't ask me why). I just had my EGR tube break on my 96 Sport. The seal went bad so it was leaking. The engine would idle at 2000 rpm or more, the exhaust also got a lot hotter than normal. I don't know if it would make your truck loud. I don't know how much the dealer charged me off hand but it was around $160.

The reason they put EGR on the 94 and later Explorers was for two reasons:

Mixing exhaust air into there lowers combustion temperatures, and this means the engine has less change of "pinging" (predetonation), but mine is still doing it anyway, ehehe

Mixing the exhaust also helps with emissions.
