EGR valve flow problem on 1994

My check engine light came on the other day, so i hooked up my code scanner and it says that it has an egr flow malfunction. Has anyone ever gotten thi code before? I checked the vacum and that seems fine. The egr pipe that goes to the valve is pretty rusted and is a pain to loosen the nut that connects the two together? Does anyone have an idea on what to do about this? Should I keep trying to remove the egr valve and clean it or replace it?

I have the exact same prob. I'm just gonna replace the whole EGR valve and that should fix it. It's been fine the past year it's been on for that prob but I'm gettin tired of lookin at the CEL. It's only $40 so it's that that much of a biggie. You should prolly do the same.

Check the vacuum hose that runs to the EGR valve ( on the driver's side just below the valve cover; a short hose only about three inches in length). If it has a leak, it will give you intermittent Check Engine Light indications. The truck will run fine, but the computer won't be happy. It wouldn't hurt to replace the vacuum hoses anyway, as they become brittle and develope cracks. Mine did this last summer, just before I had to get the local IM test for registration. It drove me nuts for a while.

Just a suggestion to help you (and anyone else) get more detailed responses from the forum-include any diagnostic code numbers you get along with your query. Sometimes a combination of a couple of codes will pinpoint the problem as good as a description does. I hope this helps.

I have a '94 XLT and had an EGR valve detection code problem. When the engine was running, you could also hear backflow through the EGR. Turned out my catalytic converter was clogged. Not saying you have the same problem, but it's something to consider.
