88 Ranger
Ok i have been searching all of the threads on different forums. My problem is different then most others i read. I have an 88 Ranger and this is my story. Ahile back i went to put my truck in 4wd. I pushed the 4x4 button and the light came on but i did no there the relay click. Ever since then my 4x4 lights are on both hi and lo and they will not go out and the truck is not in 4x4. I checked the boards and thought it was a problem with my shift control module as when i tested it the light did not come on. just to be safe i had my mechanic check it out and he said it was also the shift control module. I went to a junkyard and got a box and tried it and it also did not work light would not light when tested. I thought maybe becaus eit was a different part number from mine that it would not work. I got one off of ebay and it is the same par tnumber and it also will not light hte test light and nothing works. Now i am thinking the chances of having three bad shift control modules is pretty slim since it is just an electronic box. I am not sure where to look from here. I have checked the wires going into the pigtail connection on the shift control module and it does get 12 volts to it when it is supposed to. I have seen some post on the motor sensor being bad but most of those state that the lights on the dash don't work as well. Does anyone know where else i can start looking?? i really wnat to get this fixed but don't want to take it somewhere to have them say the box is bad again....this thing is driving me

Sounds to me something inside the tcase might have came apart giving you a false reading i.e. both lights are on. What you can do is, have a friend push the button while you roll under the truck with a small hammer and "tap" the side of the shift motor. Notice I said tap. If you be the mess out of the motor you will only break it. Another quick way to tell if it IS in 4x4 would be to try and spin the front drive shaft when the truck is in park. Hope this helps.

bump  Tried the hammer trick but still no worky. The thing that is throwing me off is the fact that my shift control module and the two toers i have tried don't light up the red light when tested. There is power going but no light. If the sensor was bad in the motor could it cause a problem like that with the control module?

About electric 4X4 no worky HELP!!!!!!

I am rebuilding my 1991 Ford Explorer and am finally replacing the "French" Manufactured transmission #A4LD which has been ready to blow up fow the last year because it has had no 'overdrive' at all. But also I had to rebuild the front drive shaft so now getting to the 'electric, shift' on the dash.
As I was looking through Hazer Junk yard here in West Fargo, ND. I ran across a fellow who just sold off his 1994 Explorrer and I had the same problem you where having, both hi & lo lights would stay on or the lights would not come on at all, now I am not an expert at this but this is what he told me, he said he would have problems with his unit every late fall when he did not use the transfer case that much {he only used the 4X4 in the winter time and it sat all spring and summer} because the electric shifting motor has a memory so every fall he had to go under the vehicle and rap the electric motor a couple of times with a direct blow and it would the rest of the winter:
Hope this helps, right now I am rebuilding my 8.8" rear axle converting fron a 3.73 to 3.08 gear ratio for beter gas mileage and less RPM on the engine, then I have to change the DANA35 to 3.07 revese cut also so for me it will be a while before I will have a chance to 4X4 again.
Kent
