Can anybody tell me how I'd go about wiring a electric fan up to replacemy old one.. I was looking at a fan at autozone bc I got some gift cards there and was just curious what I'd need for a controller and how I'd go about wiring it up

I think you should save some pennies and go to the junkyard to find either a Taurus or Mark VIII electric fan. They will be cheaper and pull more CFM than one from autozone. I looked at an electric fan at autozone the other day and saw a 16in that I believe flows less than 2000CFM which will not cool your Explorer on a hot summer day with the A/C blasting. Check out the Sporttruck forum and click on the Need for Speed forum. Scroll down and I believe there is a link about Taurus/Mark fans and they talk about what it takes to hook one up. If you can't find it, I will search and post you a link.

I found a 16" fan that flows 2600CFM - would that do? Not too many Taurus' or Lincolns here in Oz, so I probably have to go after market - been looking at doing this for a while, but don't want a fan that won't do the job. the wiring is actually the easy part; choosing the right size fan is the make or break.

I have used elcetric fans ( 2 different ones ) on my SOHC for 6 years with no problems whatsoever cooling my truck even when towing a Jeep on a tandem trailer in the Florida summer heat.

Take a look at http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75371&highlight=electric+fan and http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140251&highlight=electric+fan

I've read your threads - very informative. I don't suppose you know what CFM electric fan is required to keep a 4.6 v8 cool?

Sorry, I do not know.

However, the flow from even the FAL 150 sure did the job for me.

I am sure that if you get a fan that flows at least 2600CFM and your cooling system is working properly, you should be good. I believe the main thing is you need to cover as much of the radiator as possible for optimum cooling.

Here is the forum link I was talking about earlier:

The Taurus fan flows 3200 CFM and the Mark 8 was nearly 4000 CFM. There were many threads about this swap on Jeep and Mustang forums all over the internet. All you basically need is the fan and a good digital fan controller.

I wanna do the e-fan swap this summer... that mechanical fan is so damn loud.

Before you go to the junk yard to get a Mark VIII fan, do some research on it. I have read that it pulls alot of amps. In fact, any good electric fan setup will pull significant amps, so you may need to upgrade the charging system along with a fan controller and relays.

It does pull a large amount of amps, but its nothing our trucks couldn't handle. The digital fan controller also includes relays. Mustang guys have found good luck with the DCC Controllers.

Wonder if this is needed if you're located up north...it's pretty darn cold up here haha.

I'd do it to reduce the amount of noise the stock fan makes though. It's HELLA loud...VOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM

That's why I want to go to an e-fan... it's so much quieter.

YOU NEED TO FIND OUT HOW MANY CFMs are needed (probably over 2100) this would give enough flow so that it doesn't overheat then you need a wiring kit so that it can be instsalled and work the same way as a front wheel drive vehicle does (it kicks on at a certain temperature.) some kits come with an adjustable thermostat so that it works at the proper engine temp according to your vehicle specs do your homework if you use a cheap fan youll end up burning the fan motor.

The controller that works the best is from DC Controls. Here's their website:
http://www.dccontrol.com/0820.htm

It includes the temp probe and the controller is adjustable for A/C and on/off temps. Its a very nice setup. They have a controller for dual Mark 8 fans if you think one will not do the job. I'm pretty sure a Mark 8 fan with nearly 4000 cfm will outflow the mechanical fan on our trucks.
