Electric Motor Running When I Brake?

This is what I bought

I just got it yesterday & so far I like it. It needs an inspection so I am hoping everything is mechanically sound. It has low milage & is is very good shape.

The only thing which troubles me is when I brake.

After it almost comes to a stop I hear an electric motor kick in & the brake pedal tightens up until the motor stops & then the brake becomes soft again.

I asked the guy when I bought it & he said it was the ABS system but my mechanic says no. Inspection is next week, he is going to look at it then.

It brakes fine but it does the above.

Any input would be appreciated!

ABS, pull the ABS fuse to see if it improves. I have no idea which one the ABS fuse is but look at the owners manual, or search the forum.

Eh...I just looked at the owners manual.... don't think it will work.

The fuse controls all these:
PCM system,
stoplamps, AWD,
anti-lock brake, speed
control, trailer tow

You're looking at fuse 13, look a quarter of an inch below the line you just read and you should see:

Fuse #: 14
Fuse Amp Rating: 10 amp
Circuit: Anti-Lock System.

Thats on Page 152.
Now turn to page 154:
Fuse #5 and #6: ABS system.

It did not come with any records & no owners manual. I found the pdf file owners manual someone listed on these forums. (THANKS FOR THAT)

I was going to do the auto check from ebay when I bought it but I didn't. The person selling it has a good reputation here in Reading. He is a car fanatic! He has a car museum above his business!

Clean the front ABS sensors with brake cleaner spray.

Remove abs sensors and clean rust around mounting holes.

Common problem. Usually a rust buildup where abs sensors mount in hub. The rust throws off the sensor allignment. Also clean off sensor as previous poster points out.

Could also be a bad hub, or sensor, but less likely.

Pop #5 and #6 first -- you should get an ABS light if those were the correct fuses. Do note that there are two fuse boxes on the Explorer, make sure you're removing from the right one (see owner's manual).

I just saw a post where the person removed fuse #14 on the inside fuse box & ran wires to a switch so he had the option of turning ABS on & off.

So I guess fuse #14 inside should disable it?

Yup.

I think it should be okay. I pulled two large fuses on mine to help diagnose the problem. Can't remember which ones. Was in the owners manual. Pulling them simply disabled the abs and the light came on. You should definitely try this test as a proof of the problem as you are going to have to pull the wheels, calipers & rotors to get to the hub(s).

My inspection mechanic is a friend of mine from school days.

So as long as ABS is not a required as a law, He will pass it.

PS..I pulled fuse #14 & it disabled the ABS & no motor noise...just smooth braking.

I won't miss ABS because I never had it before!

Yea...I know. I was thinking of doing the "switch" idea that someone posted so I have the option of turning ABS on or off.

Also, I would like to wait till we get a bit warmer weather here in PA. We are in the 20's now...YUK?

Day after I got the Explorer...it snowed!
