I recently bought a 1993 Explorer. Most of the lights on the instrument panel were burned out and the 4X4 did not seem to work. I bought a bunch of new bulbs for the instrument panel, pulled the panel (what a pain that was), and replaced the bulbs. When I put everything back together, the instrument panel lit up perfectly, but the tachometer and indicator lights on the right side now appeared dead. When I set the parking brake, the 4X4 engaged.

I figured I must have reconnected the right side instrument bus upside down. So, I pulled the instrument panel back out and made sure that connected was properly and securely in place (the bus only goes in one way and cannot be inverted). Now everything on the instrument panel is working properly. However, the 4X4 is still not working.

Since the 4X4 did engage when I had not properly reconnected the right side instrument bus and set the parking brake, I am fairly sure the module and motor are OK. Is it possible that the switch itself is bad?

That's a real good possibility.

Pretty common for the board to crack from people pressing the button to hard, as if they are somehow manually shifting the bloody transfer case.

Wow man! We both live in Salem and you joined almost exactly a year after me. Crazy!

I have a spare switch if you want to try it. Maybe I can help you get your 4x4 working. Since I spent almost a year diagnosing mine. (Was a blown up wire had to track it down. FR ^ and BKennedy helped me get in the right direction! :D) I know most things about the 4x4 now.

Welcome to the site.
