i have a 2000 mountaineer v8 with 192,000 miles and every once and a while when im driving theres a real loud banging and it sounds like the front driver-side tire but once i turn off the truck and turn it back on it stops i called a mechanic and he said it sounds like a bad viscous clutch but i wanted to know if anyone knows what else it could be before i drop 2000-3000 to try and fix it

First thing to look at is the size of the tyres.
AWDs have to have the same rolling diameter all round or the transfer case suffers.

I don't know if it would make it bind which is what this sounds like.

At that mileage I wouldn't be surprised if your coupling is going, especially if you don't regularly change the fluid. You could try a fluid change if you haven't already and cross your fingers. If it happens often enough, just pull your front driveshaft and see if the problem goes away. If it does you've at least narrowed it down.

Just be careful because without a front driveshaft your truck will roll away without your ebrake on. Also don't drive too long without the shaft in, as some people say that can ruin the t-case. I've done it before and never had a problem though.

Did you ever find out what was the issue here? I have a 2000 Mountaineer with the same issue. When's baby the accelerator it doesn't happen but if I accelerate moderately to hard it knocks hard and sounds like it's coming from under the truck. I did replace all u-joints including the drive shaft CV mount on the front drive shaft. I believe it's either in the transfer case or maybe the rear end.

If you want to pay for shipping I could ship you my old transfer case... I am going to be doing the 4406 swap soon.
