Emissions purge control valve.

hi, i have a 1998 ford explorer with the 4.0 v6, the check engine light came on and said that the Emissions Purge control Valve was bad on the truck i no its not expensive fix, but its timely, i am just wondering about what it does to the truck if its not fixed right away and if it predicts future problems with the truck?
