Emissions? Were they kidding?

We have such horrible smog in the valley. All the smog from the bay area just blows right into the valley and settles here.

Here they call the cash grab "Aircare". It requires testing every two years for 1992, and newer vehicles, and yearly testing for everything else....It does keep smoking beaters off the streets though, but I don't think you can use high flow exausts, as they check underneath with a mirror.

Here is a pic of my readings in 98....:D

When Florida used to do emissions testing, they also had the dyno, but didn't always use it. Only if your car was borderline or something like that. Then they wanted to see if it waould be worse under load, I guess.

At one time there was a program in Calif that would pay you $1000 to let them crush your car if it is a gross polluting vehicle. They removed the link, so I don't know if they still offer it anymore or not. The requirement list was pretty funny from my recollection:

Must have a windshield

Must have 4 wheels

Must have at least one functioning door

Must be able to move in Forward and Reverse direction under its own power

And so on

They only test HC and CO here, not NOx (NOx is mostly responsible for the brown air that you can see over San Jose and LA on most days).

Your readings are really good for HC if that is in PPM. My readings from the last test were 8 PPM HC at idle and 2500 rpm. My CO measured 0.00 % at both idle and 2500 rpm.

My latest readings were HC of 1 and CO of 0. Not bad for a modded X, huh?

Yep, that's better than mine and my engine is completely stock. I think my MAF needs cleaning though which Im planning to do soon.

If you squint at the left of the pic, it says"In parts per million (PPM)";)

In Texas, they don't care if you have stock or aftermarket exhaust, as long as you have a catalytic converter. I passed withmy Flowmaster. Maybe I'll get a high flow cat too. Even if my numbers get worse, they should still be great.

Now just have to find a place to put it on, as it's technically illegal to replace the cats on a newer vehicle. Now if I happened to "bash" one open on a "rock" or something while wheeling...

You can replace exhaust components downstream of the Cat here too, but they have a Big Brother program to help you find the correct emission parts to use as a replacement.

Dead Link Removed

Individuals from the CYA (Calif Youth Authority - young criminals in training) will help you locate a new catalytic converter in case you "accidentally" bash in the old one.

I wonder if they would replace it if you were driving down the road and all the sudden this drill bit got knocked up by your tire and suddenly went right through your cat. :D I think you'll be fine, just make sure that 'rock' accidently

'bashes' it hard enough to render it useless. And remember, you NEED that high flow one, your engine says so.

Oh, I know. That's why I'm so concerned. My poor Explorer is suffocating from the restriction in the factory cat. Poor thing.

Just thought I would make you people jealous and tell you that here in Oregon we don't had to do emissions tests. No vehicle tax either. No sales tax. Oregon Rules!

If you want to read about the future

of emissions testing go to www.obdiicsu.com which is Colorado State University. They have some interesting test cases where they correlate OBD-II results with actual testing.

Georgia requires yearly testing if you're in Atlanta, but if you're out of the city there are no tests.

And it costs whatever the place wants to charge you, up to $25.

And they only can accept cash, no credit cards. Which can be really annoying

They only stared taking payment other than cash a few years ago here...

And, how many places actually charge less than 25 if they can gouge it ?

Actually, occasionally you will find a place that only charges $20.

But the cash only thing is a pain in the ass. This past year they tested the Ex, but then they held the certificate until I came back the next day with cash because all I had was my credit card. Nothing harmful or anything, but just annoying

Yeah I know what you saying Nick. I got mine tested last week. They checked my gas cap pulled it thorugh and printed the certificate. Nothing else. I was pissed I started yelling at the guy. I mean really what the hell is the point of testing if your not even gonna test. Just charge me the extra money somewhere else. Don't make me take off work to go get that crap done. Oh and I had to pay $29 for mine becasue I was past my due date.

hmmm wonder if a propane 302 X would pass air care or is it in a different catagory?

Hmm, the problem is, they test the emmissions by the body style and motor. If you put in an older motor, or bigger, then you might run into problems. I know Speedfreak around here has a 302 in a First Gen., I wonder how it worked for him.......
