Emissions? Were they kidding?

I like CA but the laws are way too liberal for me. I am for clean air, water, etc, who isn't? But lets be sensible about it.

I remember when some volcano exploded is Asia somewhere they said it released more pollutants than all the cars ever had in total. We are still alive today.

Nature is weird. If you look around there always seems to be an exact opposite to everything. Bodily waste (cows) is used to fertilize stuff, we then eat the stuff it fertilizes. We and our cars exhale CO2, plants use the CO2 and make oxygen.

Take for example the bay that the Exxon Valdez spilled all of its oil into. People though it would take decades to repair. When it actually only took about 5-10 years.

Actually, there is still oil from the Valdez there. It's not gone yet.

00sport,
another fredneck in the house! I got my emmission form for my old honda accord so I send the slip back in and requested an extension, they gave me till February, they're so unorganized I'll bet if I never took it in they'd never know.

Ever go wheelin around here?

I don't think Austin has emissions testing, and if they do...they need to work harder ;) I think all you need is some sort of cat on the car. A friend of mine owns a racing RX-7 and all he does is places a fake cat in the exhaust system and it passes every time :) Now how does a rotary without a cat. pass? You got me...

At one time there was a program in Calif that would pay you $1000 to let them crush your car if it is a gross polluting vehicle. They removed the link, so I don't know if they still offer it anymore or not. The requirement list was pretty funny from my recollection:

Must have a windshield

Must have 4 wheels

Must have at least one functioning door

Must be able to move in Forward and Reverse direction under its own power

And so on

Just watched an interesting show on Hot Rod TV last week about the "Crusher Program". One of the things the "Crusher Program" did was let car manufacturers take a tax credit for every muscle car they turned in. The thought was that for every car they turned in, there would be a savings in polution. The manufacturer was elegible for the monetary value in savings that the car would have poluted over its life. Hot Rod Magazine went out and bought an early '70's Camaro from some guy that was about to sell it to a car manufacturer. They convinced him to sell them the car instead. The Camaro went through several engines and modifications over the years. It earned its nickname "Crucher Camaro" by the way they got it. It was pretty cool. If I remembe correctly the car could run 11s in the 1/4 and was still street legal.

yeah dude you sent me an e-mail the other week. I sent one back from you but never heard anything. We haven't been going much lately, mostly casue of the FBI being on the trails and all. drop me a PM we're probably going out to a different spot sometime this weekend.

Oh I get it now! Fredneck as in Frederick, MD. I thought it was a typo. :D

Yep good ol Fredneck, there's stickers and hats and stuff for it too. The Outer Banks may have OBX but we have FRNX
FredNeck stuff

??! Can I ask WHY the FBI is on the trails?! Have you been dropping dead bodies or something?! :D

sorry bout the email I probably overlooked it and then deleted it. I saw a Team Fredneck sticker yesterday it was so hilarious I have to find one.

FBI, Many reasons why fbi is around. Camp David is a few short miles from Frederick. Fort Detrick is here as well which is where they believe the Anthrax came from. Not the band but the stuff that was being mailed everywhere just after 9-11.

yeah and they are also up in Gambrill park. They're diving in the fire ponds up there looking for lab equipment from the guy that they think sent the anthrax letters. Mean while that means no playing on the trails up there becasue of all the guys with machine guys and all.

Actually just because a car is 24+ years old does not make it a gross polluter if it's properly maintained. My '76 Chevy Malibu had a 1950's design 2 barrel carb on a 1955 design Chevy small block 305 (which the 305 was cutting tech in 1976 as it was a brand new displacment then) it had EGR and a cat converter, I never had any problems getting it to pass emissions here in Dallas County, TX. it actually could pass the more stringent late model standards.

That's absolutely true, BUT most people don't maintain their cars, regardless of age. And statistics show that most older cars are gross polluters, and couldn't ever pass emissions.

I don't like programs like that. All they do is take cars off the street that would make great projects and fixer-uppers and stuff like that. Oh well, what can ya do

A lot of people don't like programs like that (myself included). It caused a huge uproar in California. I don't think the program has been in effect since 1999 or 2000 though since that was the latest information I could find on it. Hot Rod Magazine's goal was to show that they could take a late 60s, early 70s muscle car and pass the emissions standards that were in effect at the time. When they picked the car up from the seller, they drove it straight to an emissions check place and it passed with flying colors. They then proceeded to build a very fast muscle car with many modifications. The emissions output got even less. Had they not bought the car and instead let the manufacturer buy the car, the car would have been crushed, hence it earned its neckiname "Crusher Camaro". Many good cars did end up getting crushed thanks to CARB though.

Damn CARB

Reminds me of a quote I read once somewhere:
"There is nothing wrong with California that a rise in ocean levels couldn't cure." (No offense towards Californians, I just thought it was a funny quote.)

No offense taken here. Might raise my property value if I end up with beach front property.
