AutoZone is having a deal where if your CEL has been on, they'll read the codes for you. I went today over lunch since mine comes on occasionally, but will go off on it's own. The codes came back 172, 185, & 186. All the information I could get from him was that these corresponded to low signal from the oxygen sensor, MAF signal below limits on the input side, and injector pulse width larger than should be.

Based on these codes, I think I understand why my X has been a little "boggy" on the start-up and why my gas mileage has gone down. My question is do I need to replace the oxygen sensor and a fuel injector or is there some way to remove them and clean them? Is there other things I should be looking at as well? What can I do to verify these are the problem areas before I spend the money for replacements?

Definately clean the MAS, that will help things out. Also, once you start getting O2 sensor codes, it's a good idea to just get new ones. As for the injectors, the problem might go away with a clean MAS and new O2s. However, you can go get an injector cleaning service for around $80. Or, try dumping some injector cleaner additive in your fuel for a few tanks. Don't think you need new injectors. Good luck!

Hi I am new to the message board. I have been looking around for a while but now I have a question. My check engine light keeps coming on, my 92 Explorer is running fine but the light keeps coming on. I was going to check the code with a code scanner but I was thinking, my Check engine light is not always on it come on after about 3-5 min of driving. Do I have to check it on while the light is on or will it store the info for me to check when the light is off.

yes, it will store the code for future retrieval
