just testing the waters, as currently the X is fine, but just for future reference....

could the later model sohc's (for example a remanned 2010) and the corresponding 5r55s work in a 2nd gen? or is there a lack of space or some other constraint... (just curious because i drove a 2010 4.0 recently and it seemed quicker than my 2nd gen...)

if not, would the sohc out of 99-01 work?

You can use almost any other SOHC 4.0 V6 version. The first 1997 5R trans had some slight differences of the 5R55E, so for that stick with a 99+ model.

alrighty!!! thats promising! would using a 2010 for exmaple engine requore a different pcm or is it simply a drop in? would the 5r55S work without any modificstion? i feel like o heard the casing may be different or something somewhere

The engine you can use almost any SOHC 4.6 long block, the external parts you have to use your old PCM, wiring harness, and anything else which is different. So you swap everything outside that doesn't match the old engine, keep everything which does match.

The 5R55E is different from the other 5R versions, that you are limited to just the 5R55E models, for your computer.

thanks! one more random question- could i put the front clip (fenders, hood, bumper) from a 1st gen on a 2nd gen, as if memory serves right the frame is the same... and can the rear hatch off a 1st gen fit too?

The rear hatch will fit, just needs the old bumper and tail lights to go with it. Need to run more of the license plate light wiring as well since the older models held it on the bumper rather than hatch. But I've seen someone recently swap it, so it is possible. Would assume the front end will be the same, but I can't be 100% on that. Just need time and patience

No sorry, the 1st gen front has a different clip under the fenders, than the 95+ trucks. My 99 is a good example of what can be swapped around, it's a 99 front clip(entire front and to the radiator support), with a 93 rear body welded to it. The 2nd gen's have a different tail light part of the body, it's curved along the light, instead of straight up and down.

Look through my 99/93 thread, the link in my signature. There are lots of pictures there of my trucks cut apart and pieced back together. I had to modify a 95-97 tail light to make it fit onto my 93 rear body. The 91-94 hatch is very similar to the 95-97 hatch though, they have just slight differences of the wiper, wiring, 3rd brake light, and the lock cylinder.
