Hi all,

I am replacing the lower thermostat housing as I had a pretty bad leak on the one installed. I ordered a new one on www.discountbodyparts.com once they confirmed it fitted my 6Cyl 4.0L engine. As you can see on the linked pictures the sensors are not placed the same way.

On the old one I need to screw them in, whereas on the new one I would simply have to push them in. The trouble is that I can't fit the old sensors in the new housing. After looking at multiple forums and pictures of engines it seems like there are 2 types of housings for the engine I've got. Is this correct? Do I need to buy the other type of housing, or is there a way to fit those sensors into the new part I have?

cannot view the photos in the links [directs to the GMAIL login page]. i just replaced my lower and upper thermostat housing two weeks ago and the replacement part I obtained was the same as the original part in my truck - threaded entry for the 2 sensors. I also read about new t-stat housing units that have push-in but the Dornan replacement housing I bought was the entire assembly - upper/lower housing with thermostat included. the sensors were not included.

Thanks for the link. I ordered the 2 sensors and everything should be fine now. Thanks for your help

Hi again,

The engine was overheating and there was a huge leak in the thermostat housing which is why I replaced it, hoping that it would fix the overheating issue. I replaced the whole unit (housing, thermostat and new sensors). After letting her warm up on idle, I drove around to test her out, she was running a little cooler than before which was good. After a couple of miles she started rattling, loudly, like if the fan was hitting something (coffee grinding sort of noise) and that is when she started overheating very quickly
Any ideas on what the problem could be now?

It's only a guess but possibly an impellor off the water pump broke off. Remove the belt and turn the pulley to the water pump and see if there's a noise.

I'll take a look at this tonight. Now if this is the issue, wouldn't it make this noise as soon as I start the engine? I'm asking because the noise will only start once she is at operating temperature, not before...
