I have a 2001 4.0 sohc that pings like crazy under light throttle, octane doesn't make a difference. Has done it since I bought it. Tthe dealer tells me it's the ethanol in the gas that causes it. Anyone else have this problem? and suggested fixes. I have since put in a superchips, flowmaster, and a KKM intake system and it still pings. Thinking about changing to a hotter plug or something. Any help is appreciated! Oh yes under moderate (1/2) to WOT it runs fine!

Thanks Eric

Hotter is not the way to go! Detonation is caused by the fuel in the cylinder lighting off (burning) before the piston reaches top dead center. This is usually caused by several things, octane being one of them. Octane is a fuel's ability to resist burning. The higher the octane, the hotter the spark needed to ignite it and the lower the chanse of detonation. You said that octane didn't affect your problem, so I think I would agree with the dealer on the ethonal causing the problem. Thing is, detonation isn't good for an engine. Talk to your dealer and ask if going a step colder on the plugs would help and if so would dooing such a thing void any warranty you might have.

Are you sure it's a ping and not a sound like air rushing through the intake or an exhaust sheild rattling? I thought i had a ping, but it was just the exhaust sheild and i thought i had a vaccuum leak, but it was just air rushing past the intake. Also all of the recent engines have ping sensors and should automatically adjust to prevent pinging.

Hey 95XLT, my Exhaust sheild squeaks too. Did you ever fix yours or figure out how to? It annoys the crap outta me and I dunno how to fix it :( .

I just took mine off....:D As long as you don;t park on top of tall dry grass, you should have to worry. either that or just stick a few metal hose clamps around the loose sheild.
