I have a 2001 Explorer Limited 4.0 w 180,000 miles. Today I had to floor it to get onto the interstate and around someone who wasn't paying attention. Engine got to around 4200rpm for a couple of seconds when it just sputtered and died. All of the electronics were still on and functioning on the inside. I pulled to the shoulder and turned everything off and tried to start it again; the starter would turn but the engine didn't crank at all. Had to get a wrecker to haul it off.

Anyone have any idea what I'm up against? This is the first major engine problem I've had in the 12 years I've had it. It's had some rough starts for about a year when it's cool/cold outside but once it warmed up it always ran like new.

That doesn't sound good. I'm guessing the timing chain broke; which, probably explains why the starter is spinning but the engine has no compression.
