Engine dies when...

'94 4wd Explorer
...we try to start it for the first time of the day and the A/C was left on the day before. It will fire up for just a few seconds then die. Then, without changing anything at all, it will start back up with no trouble. If we turn off the the A/C before we try to start it the first time, it starts fine. This is on my 4.0 V-6 '94.

It sounds like the computer is forgetting to disengage the clutch and upon initial start up the extra load is killing the engine. When you restart it, the computer is likely remembering to disengage the clutch untill the engine RPM stabilizes and then it will start working properly. As long as this is the only problem, and you can live with it, let it be and learn to adjust to turning the A/C off before sutting the engine off every night.
