Engine efficiency question

Two things I learned about my '95: I got better mileage running it semi-hard, I got better mileage running with O/D off.

The motor seems to be more "efficient" in the 2-3k rpm range.

on the highway?!?

so i should run it semi-hard for a tank and see if that helps? because i cant drive much softer now and the mileage sucks

I bought a '91 with realtively low mileage (56K) back in late April and I used a motor flush and changed the oil, tranny fluid and filter, fluids in the transfer case and diffs, cleaned the MAF, changed the plugs and wires, cleaned and relubed the brakes (pads were near new but vehicle had mostly sat for 2 years) cleaned and repacked the front wheel bearings, did the TPS mod and set it to .96v (Was .8v originally), removed the silenced for the intake, opened up the airbox and put in a K&N filter, removed the worthless luggage racks, lubed the front end and rear u-joints ....

Took a trip to Wisconsin Memorial Day weekend and got 21.9 MPG (10% Ethanol, 89 octane) and could have gotten better if I wasn't following a friend in a '97 F250 Heavy Duty with a camper on and pulling a boat so we were going fast downhill and then dropping back going uphills ... not the best on MPG (He got 11 MPG but only gets 12MPG unloaded)

On average (Mostly city driving) I was get 17.5 MPG but dropped to 16 MPG after fixing the A/C (and using it a lot) .... I hope to pick up a little after the valve body rebuild and shift kit (we used to gain a little putting them in my Dad's fleet of F250's back in the 80's) and a little more going to all synthetic (Diffs and transfer case are already syn) ....

None of the things I did in and of itself gain you much but the sum total obviously got me more than the average '91 Explorer owner ....

i hate to tell you this..but my 96 4x4 auto with 3:73s and 31s gets 15.5 in town. and i run it pretty hard..theres lots of flooring it. it allways shifts into 2nd at 5k RPMs..and i run with the O/D off in town all the time.

these motors in my experance like to get run semi-hard like otehrs have said. now i run mine pretty darn hard. and i think 15.5 in town is awsome..so try drving alittle faster..lol

ill give it a whirl... hopefully something will change

actually, isnt this the best condition for optimizing gas mileage? having a constant velocity eats gas when ur going up hill because that means ull have to drop to a lower gear - which would mean more gas per unit amount of time..

this is why you never really want to use Cruise Control when you're in the mountainous/hilly regions.. doing so would keep u switching between high gears and low gears.. eating up gas in the lower gears.

running stock tires, in town city driving aka (go for 4 mins/stop, never getting above 50, and then idle for about 5-10 mins like this for an hour) will get me 12 mpg. But if its highway I can get 21 on normal gas. So the system is clean, its just well explorers dont get great gas mileage.

Anytime I was running 60 or under it worked.

I got highway 13 MPG the day I bought my X. I did oil and all filters, new plugs and wires, foam intake cleaning, new shocks. I have bugshield (loss there), stock tires at 28psi, 3.27 gears and got 17 MPG on 300 mile trip yesterday.

Read my previous post in this thread about what you can do.

And remember, in my opinion, you will never see over 230 miles per tank (unless you go all-highway) with your current gearing and tire size and OHV engine.

How does flooring it going downhill and them my having to back way off the gas (Losing already built up momentum because of the vehicle in front of me going to gain MPGs ? We are taking going from 65 to 75-80 and then back down to 45-55 then back to 65 ... then do it all over again on the next hill ...

A constant speed (or RPMs) is the way to get the best gas mileage .... ask Aldive, the Master of MPGs and I bet he tells you the same ...
