Engine Gone.. need SOHC experts fast!

Check NAPA, Advance ect. I even had a Ford dealer quote me a low price, but they could not deliver. Jasper is high. There is a remanufacturer here in Richmond, Capitol City Rebuiders. They supply everybody around here.

This is insane. What caused it, pics?

No clue what caused it.. i have a theory though..

Seeing how i hydrolocked my engine twice but it still ran fine after each event, im pretty sure that one of the rods reached its compressive yield point and therefore never went back to normal. Once a metal reaches this point it becomes weak. Thats why it ran fine for 2000 more miles before breaking in half and BAM BAM BAM.

Another theory is my crank snapped in half. yea it sounds wierd but we took my oil pan off and looked up there and somthing is laying on the bottom and looked like a screw backed off... i donno- i need to tear it apart to find out what actually broke.

I dont have any pics and wont know what happened for a while because saturday night after we pulled it out i came to school with my friend (i commute, he lives on campus) and ive been sleepin in his dorm on the floor. Havent been home and wont be home till thursday night.

BTW: im ordering my engine from japser. $2800 (including installation kit) + $500 core (my core should be good cause of the lower pan looks like swiss cheese, not the block itself)

were you driving it hard when it crapped out

nope, just runnin to the bank to get the tool guys some money at work. I was accelerating, but not fast... id say a max of 3k rpm's.

I'm gonna have to agree with you on the snapped crank. It can't be a rod, because there are no rods. :)

When I was at the dealer for those joyful 5 months I heard many stories from the mechanics. I was surprised when I heard stories about SOHC's failing with 4k miles on them. The mechanic told me a lady came in with 6k on her SOHC with a snapped crank. The crazy part is it blew when idling at a traffic light. Can you imagine snapping a crank at idle? Sounds kinda unreal. They said that most of the failures occured at idle.

Good luck with your new motor. It took my dealer 3 days to put the new motor in. I'm sure you, someone who's never replaced one before, can do it faster than that. Stupid Ford

thanks for the knowledge.

this will actually be my 3rd motor swap. Within the past month i put a 350 in my friends 80's transam. Then two weeks ago we put a straight 6 in my boss's jeep (he bought the jeep for $300 with a seized motor).

Im planning on prepping everything friday and saturday after work hours. that way sunday morning its basically "drop in" and the rest of sunday will be diagnosing what vacuum lines i f'd up or what sensors went bad, etc.

No rods????? What do you think connects the piston head to the crank, (connecting rod) that's the type of rod he's talking about, not pushrods.

Good story at your link, x24, dealers suck. :fire:

whew, i was letting the "rod" thing go for fear of sounding stupid... i thought to myself "man this sohc must be really different than other engines, whats connecting the piston?".

and in engines with pushrods... if one of them snaps dont you just get valves crushed.. not holes in the lower pan?

That new engine looks solid and should not have too many problems trying to fit into your engine bay. I had a SOHC engine installed into my truck 2 years ago with "slight" adjustments. Haven't had any problems yet... That engine's got a green light all over it. Go 4 it buddy

lol well i hope i dont have to make any adjustments cause an SOHC came out :D

my engine came yesterday so i took the train home from school.. lol man they look totally different when they're clean! I had 145K miles of build-up in my engine... this new one looks so much more open, and its bored (sp) out a little too. So if i thought my old one was peppy, i cant wait to get this fresh one in there

what did you do, convert from OHV to SOHC? if so, how much cooler is it

You bet bro...

The original engine in my '96 Explorer was an OHV engine... 150 or 155 hp i think. It wasn't as peppy, exciting, and fast as the other engines that have come out for the explorer. Ironically, my engine did the exact thing yours did @ around 111,000 miles or so and it just crapped out completely. We spent around $1900 USD for a newer '98 SOHC Engine with 6000 miles at the time. We had our local mom-and-pop mechanic install the engine for us and I love it to this day... definitely worth it

hey guys, i was just talking to ben on aim and we thought of something..

on my old engine i used syntec blend because i never had full synth in it and it used to have an oil leak that i didnt want to re-start..

but in this new engine im going to start with mobile 1 synthetic (5w30) off the bat, do i change it again after 1000miles due to the break in period? lol ive never owned a "new" engine before

Roy,
yea going from 160 - 205 hp and 210ft-lbs of torque is a huge jump.. almost like adding a super charger. glad you like it.. haha i know some guys on this site that would condemn you for what you did.. for 2 reasons: 1) people love the OHV over the SOHC cause of the old recall and 2) its said to be just as hard to do the V8 swap, so doing another 6 is a waste. I dont know how much truth there is to that but i dont care, i love my engine.

any engine that can get beat like man and hydrolocked twice and STILL run for another 2000 miles wins in my book

Hey sk1er17, let us know of the progress for your new engine, I wanna hear about how the engine works, runs, and feels.

Sorry, when I hear rods I automatically think pushrods. I always call piston rods piston rods. My fault.

Passenger Side HOLE ( Not Big crack, didnt fall apart..)

And now, looking up at bottom of engine, with oil pan off.

Timing chains/valves all in perfect condition.

Anyone have the wiring schematic for all the sensors on the engine and/or a schematic for the vacuum lines? I didnt get a chance to put everythin back on tonight because i fell behind so im hoping i remember where everything goes...

This is kind of a coincident! I have one of their brand new engines sitting right next to our dead 91 Ex. If you lived closer I would give you the old block. You might want to give yourself plenty of time to get the old one out because of a couple of bolts that are a genuine pain. After I got the old one out I called them and they told me exactly what parts to trade. They seem like a nice bunch to deal with and I got the engine for a little over $2100 with shipping. Since it is an automatic I think if I dumped the oil out of the torque converter and filled it back up with the same amount that came out and then pulled the pan to change the filter I can consider that part done. All I need now is time!

what you mean by "plenty of time to get the old one out"?.. those pics above are the old one. My friend started pulling it out literally 15 minutes after the engine blew and it was sitting on the engine stand about 3 hours later.

New engines in.. but it's going to be another week. I need:
-Harmonic Balancer
- 1 torque converter bolt (anyone have one?)
- Some stuped sleeves that adapt our fuel injectors to the heads... of course no-one has them in the state because they're not often replaced

and my driver side header is being a PITA to get back on for some reason
