Engine Idle Racing

If it is time for a coolant change, then I would go ahead and do it. You are bound to have to change it sometime, probably within the next year. The biggest deciding factor to me would be how quickly I would be able to change it out when it did fail. Mine went a week without any symptoms other than the high idle (including a 40 mile off-road trip) before my temperature gauge started to read high. If I was in a position to change it within a week of noticing the high idle (which I am) I would just wait to do it unless I had to flush the coolant in which case I would do it now. It is much less strenous to change it under your terms.

Temp

Temp just started reading high today. Not much, but more than normal and looks like it's struggling to keep centered.

Too weird. I might just try the thermostat.

Referring to your earlier post: These symptoms were going on for a few minutes during a few times driving before I ever looked at the temp guage. It was pegged at HOT! I opened the hood a little and kept it slow until I got to the dealership about 2 miles away.

Sounds alot like what I have..runs like crap when it gets hot out..but mine idles low and dies at stop signs..guy at a shop today told me my oil pressure was bad, and that controlls the lifters making it where my engine doesnt run right. When its cool it runs great, when its hot it will bog and die..knocks and pings while it dies..now I guess I will have to install a new engine and that SUCKS!! Sometimes I will be at a stop light and it idles down to like 750..then goes up to like 1200..900 seems normal, maybe its low..im at wits end!

Dies when hot?

I'd get a second opinion - it could be a lot of things.

If it is a loss of oil pressure then you could try thicker oil and see if it runs better / longer.

Have you read the computer codes or checked the sensor readings?

If you do need a new engine due to low oil pressure then it could be due to the cam tensioner problem that SOHC engines have. Do you have a SOHC?

By the way...

I installed a new thermostat and everything is back to normal.

Not too hard to do either...

If I could only get my steering problems under control I'd quit looking for that Subaru WRX.
