I bought my X with a bad engine (93 4.0 130,000 miles), i just finished pulling the motor out today. i'm going to be putting another 4.0 back in (bout 80,000 miles on it) but i was wondering if there was any performace stuff that i would see good gains from without breaking the bank that i should do to the new engine before it goes back into the truck?

the good, it already has a superlift 5.5" lift and 33x10.5 bfg at's
the bad, still running 3.73's

i know i need to re-gear and it is going to happen (soon) but i figured while the motor is out if these is something i might want to do later i might as well do it now.

Suggestions, comments, questions?

thanks.

If it was me, I'd put a 7.2L diesel engine & corresponding tranny in while the 4.0L was out......but, I love diesels, so that's my comment... :)

Withought tearing down the engine the only things available to enhance power would be headers and other typical "bolt on" upgrades (ie. throttle body, larger MAF, etc...).

are headers typically worth the it? do see enough gains to really justify the money?

lets try again

Since i really didn't get an answer the first time, i'm going to try this again...

In the process of removing the motor the bots connecting the y-pipe to the headers were too rusted to be removed. I no longer have a working y-pipe. at autozone a y-pipe is $116, don't really want to pay that. Are there any headers that come with a y-pipe that won't break the bank? preferable around the $300 range.

going to be adding

cold air intake
flowmaster 40, 2.5" pipes (same setup on my ranger, sounds great)

I had to cut my Y-pipe too when I pulled my engine. I bought some pace setter headers because they were dirt cheap (arround $130-$200 if I remember right). I don't think they give a power gain like a good set of $500 headers. But they should help some. I think mine came from summit.

might wanna think about doing all the gaskets valve cover intake rear seal an maybe even head gasket so much easy rrr when engine is out
even with only 80000 miles on the one ur putting in u really have no way to know how it was mantained

Wow. So insightful. Not realisticaly possible, but insightful.

Sometimes its better to say nothing.

But to answer your question, nows a good time to replace what you can inn hopes of avoiding trouble in the future. Head gaskets are a big one, but new plugs and wires as well and whatever else you want. There isnt much to be done without really tearing intot he block. Creager did a great writeup on how to build the 4.0 for max power. If your really serious there would be some rgeat ideas in there.

We replaced the oil pump and and oil pan gasket on mine when replaced the engine.
