Engine knock

I think you can forget the idea of bad plugs etc, these faults I think can ony be timing related and point to the toming chain slipping or breaking, I am betting that you have a taping rattling noise for a shile from the top of the engine before this happened, that would have been the timing chain guide breaking up, its a very common issue, and caused by the poor design and also poor oil feed. the fix before damage you have is the 00m12 kit here in the uk, I believe its another part number in the US. I am afraid it is terminal to the engine in almost all cases.

This is as far as I know mostly on the 4 litre sohc engine second generation

If you have a rattle on start up and it shows up at 2-2500 revs again- please get that kit and fix it, it replaces the worn guide and also contains a new oil feed and a part that holds oil when the engine is off to enable better and quicker supply when starting and prevent wear, also included are new intake manifold seals as they tend to harden and allow the mixture to go lean and cause running problems. In this forum you will find referance to the American part numbers for this fix- I cannot tell you how important this is if you want to avoid a massive repair bill when the timing goes out and you incur bent valves and the like.
I have a 2000 Explorer Northface, and am having the 00m12 kit fitted in a week or two to avoid that very issue, I can hear the rattle on start up, for now its very light- but I will have it done asap.
Good luck with your Explorer

yeah, i tried the 00m12 kit, i replaced everything but the tensioner because the tensioner that was in there was the updated tension(visual difference). Didn't help to much, but the gaskets solved my startup issues in the morning.

However...some on the forum here might say i've crossed to the dark side, had an opportunity to buy an '01 Dodge Dakota, tough truck i must say. So i solved all the issues i was having with the X....got the Dakota, hasn't let me down yet.

Probably get flamed for this...oh well :p:

hey no big, hopefully that dodge is reliable for you.

Only time will tell. Just glad i got something worth modding now, the Flowmaster 40 muffler sounds mean on the V6 in it. It's not back for a '01, had 74K miles on it, paid 6K for it. I thought it was great deal.

I figured with the mileage on the X, and what it needed done (bodywork, interior, engine), it was just better off to find something else. Playing the guessing game trying to get rid of the CEL was getting old.

The previous motor did exactly what your saying....I wish I would of caught it before it destroyed my motor. The "new" motor is missing and knockin about the same. I'll have to check out the timing chain guide on this motor. After this I give up. Everything is basically new in the truck. Thanks for the info.
