hey guys...

was wondering if you guys could really help me.. on this issue... i purchased a ford explorer 2002 from somone whom modified the exhaust and he told me the sensor was removed ? (dont quote me on that or something due to the exhaust being installed) as the after market exhaust doesnt have those sensors hence why the engine light is on... the engine runs fine.. sound great.. and everything.. just wondering if i can fix this or has anyone else experience this same thing... as im worried that if say something did go wrong with my engine i wont know as the engine light is constantly on due to the after market exhaust...

Thank you for your time in reading my post and replying guys..

It sounds like the messed with the catalytic converter(s) and oxygen sensor(s). You will need to get under there and check it out to see what they have done.

oh ok. thank you so much. ill check that out... umm so engine shouldn't be affected?

I wouldnt rely on what someone, who is trying to sell a car, tells me. I would check the codes myself.

If it turns out that the codes being thrown are Bank 1 Sensor 2 and Bank 2 Sensor 2 O2 sensor efficiency codes (P0420. P0430, etc.) , then they probably removed the catalytic converters or broke the catalyst inside them out. If they removed the sensors altogether, then they will need to be replaced. It is illegal to operate a vehicle on public roads with the catalytic converters removed, period. With that being said, tons of people do it without getting caught. Is the lack of the second sensors or converters hurting the engine? No, the sensors only check the catalyst efficiency, they do not control the actual engine operating parameters at all.

02 sensors deff.. just had one of mine throw a cold last week.. easy to replace, 60$ per sensor just do it urself.. If you bring it to someone they going to charge you 250+$ to fix one

This is true. Most people get away with this in states that do not do emmissions testing or inspections to get license plates renewed. The OP info says he is in Melbourne, I assume this is Australia. IF you have emissions testing you will need to put the cats back on, replaced, or install emulators to emulate the rear o2's.

hey guys.. yeah the info was very helpful i ended up taking it to a mechanic who then hooked up this computer to check all the sensors.. and then later found it was a cylinder not firing properly or something due to possible coils or leads.. but i was not running all 8 cylinders... so the guy that sold me the car was just telling me lie about the sensor.. on the cats as they are all there still its from the cat back that the exhaust was modified..... sighs.. but yeah.. thanks though for the info.. was so helpful...

at least now can get on with more mods... lol hahaha but really thank you guys for the information... i gave it to the mechanic and he checked it all out..

kind regards

Glad you fixed it.
Never trust the seller. He's just trying to sell the truck. Some people will tell you anything to make a sale.
