Is there any other diagnostic tool used for the engine light apart from the common OBD2 codes?

all DTC systems are based on the OBD2 standard,

if you want to do more than read and reset the codes you will need to spend a lot more and to be honest, you don't get much more out of UK explorers.

I've used a wide range of ELM327 based systems but gave up and spent £14.99 for a reader from ebay

What are you hoping to get out of it?

im baffled by what mine does, the light comes on, i code read it, "no code", i clear code, light goes off, then about 10miles of driving or sitting at idle on the driveway for 20min, the light appears again and same story "no code"... iv looked all over sites about this and cant find a solution?

Does your reader read tranny codes?

i beleave so, even if theres a transmission code wouldnt the o/d light be blinking?

Sounds like you may have a bad ground to the PCM or something internal could be bad. Is anything else going on? Bad MPG possibly? Stalling out? Bucking?

no bad mpg, stalling or bucking, only that it runs lean at high rpm, confirmed by the dyno station it leans out after 4500 rpm, thats all wrong with it. earths have been cleaned up since but same problem.
