This is my first post to the MOD section. I am looking to make my first mod to my 02 EXP 4.6 V8 Limited. I know what I would like just don't fully know how to go about it. So here I go....I would like to have a Mustang sound with a little added Pick ME UP for my EXP...would this be an engine mod or a muffler mod??? I am looking for help with parts and suggestions from some of you great EXP lovers and modifiers!!!

I know this may be a general question....but this is my first time!!!

thanks for all your help...

If you want it to sound louder, than you would need a louder muffler. Like a Borla, Flowmaster, Gibson, etc. This will gain a couple horsepower, but will mostly be for the sound. You can either purchase a cat-back system which includes new pipe for about half the vehicle or you can purchase a similarly sized louder muffler and have a muffler shop weld it in to replace the stock muffler.

The biggest thing to consider with a loud muffler is if you will be able to live with it on long trips.

The only engine mod that would change the sound is a Cold Air Intake. K & N sells one for ~$200. This will gain a few horsepower on the top end, and will be slightly louder. You can check out K & N's website for more details.

For about two dollars you can go to your local Home Improvement store and buy two 1 inch PVC pipe plugs. Then you cut the clamps to the two drone boxes located on the intake tube and put the plugs in place of them. Finally, put hose clamps where the old clams were and what you have done is basically straighten and deturbulate the flow of air into the engine to a degree. Then you can do an air box mod (explained in a thread here) and remove the tube that is used to party silence and restrict the air intake. After two dollars and removal of the tube you get about 70-80% of the sound that a cold air intake would give you. I would argue that you probably get 20% of the horsepower and fuel mileage that they claim too...though I wouldn't do it for that reason. You can then top it off with a K&N or other less restrictive air filter to help increase the noise too.

Try it, it is reversible and only gives you noise at the higher rpms...when you want it, not when you are just cruising on a long trip or something.
