I have a question about my 93 explorer xlt...it has 130,000 miles. Today we took it in and we were told that it has a bad cylinder and two bad oxygen sensors everything else is good and no problems with anything else. The garage quoted us a price of 6500 for a new engine.. my question : Is that a reasonable option and should we do it? I know almost nothing about cars and that seems like alot of money for something taht I thought you could replace by putting in a new cylinder head to replace the old one.. Any advice would be appreciated as I have no idea what to do! I am consiedring selling the Explorer and buying something else but I love it and I hate to do that.

Thats pretty expensive I think. If you have a bad cylinder, it could be any number of things... bent valves, worn rings, burnt piston, etc..... Probably will require a complete rebuild.... removing engine, tearing it apart replacing parts... machining sufaces... I would shop around at other shops and see what they would charge..

The O2 sensors are only $100 so that's a non-issue.

You have to see what specifically is wrong with that cylinder, then go from there.

Thanks for the advice so far.... I knew the sensors were a non issue because i had one go bad on a Celebrity wagon several years ago and they were cheap to do. My husband just got back from the auto shop and is trying a couple of things to see if they help. The Explorer is really his baby! Mine is a 94 Excel that is still going strong!!!! Basically we are going to try a couple of oils and see if we can blow this cylinder out. (I think I got that right) We are also replacing the mass airflow sensor (is that a part?) and maybe that will help as well...

Well... back to the truck and thanks for the advice so far.

I had my 91 done about two years ago. I got a remanufactured engine from NAPA for about $1900. Labor to install was $550. You do the math. Then find a new mechanic.

Up here in New York some High Schools or trade schools teach students how to repair cars. You can get work done by them and labor is free you just pay for parts.
