Well after a visit to the stealer & $768 (Canadian) later, my problem with engine ping is still relevant. Under load and between 2K-3K rpm.

What was done:

First of all, I tried previous to the visit, cleaning of the MAF sensor, IAC, and fuel system cleaner, different octane & service stations. No fix.

I then decided to take it in for one of the probs on my list to be checked at the stealer. They found that my MAF sensor was defective in their diagnosis. Replaced it for new. Had them replace fuel filter, do a fuel system service, & intake (carbon deposits) service. Oil change (due for it), and throw a box of six plugs (plat) on front seat for me to service.

I still have this prob, but have yet to put the new plugs in (tomorrow).

Am I missing something here?

Please share your thoughts as to what may fix this...Please!!!

Thanks...

J

(oh, they did my seat recall, and that was the only fix to my visit;) )

i was having that problem, i got a tune up, but since i was at 101k with out ever changing the plugs it ended up costing 520 for egr solenoids, coil assemble and labor, now i dont have the problem any more

Thanks BauerExplorer!

I will look into that.

I do have to add that I was driving around again last night and the ping wasn't as noticable. I'm wondering if the weekend mech at Ford reset the computer? You never know? Could be?

Thanks again!

You can do a search for seafoam here. I dont know much about it but i think it may help your problem. Goodluck.

I don't know specifically about any bad parts to cause the ping...but my X does it too.
My X will ping under light to medium load if I use 87 octane fuel. It has done this since I bought it with 23,000 miles on it. I use 89 octane and absolutely no ping! I tried 87 again a couple of times and ping...ping city. My engine and parts are exceptionally clean and well cared for. My engine just demands greater than 87 octane!?!?

run a compete bottle of seafoam through the engine then change the plugs and wires

are you sure you are not hearing the timing chains they sound exactly like a ping

Just wanted to share my results with you...

I guess the service dept. @ Ford may have not reset the comp in my truck. After driving for a bit at highway speeds my 2-3k ping is now gone. I also replaced my spark plugs after the fact.

Cheers!

Thanks to all who replied!!!

Is there a tell-tale way of distinguishing the ping noise from the timing chain noise ?

I get what I think is pinging, under load, that appears around 2500 RPM, and goes away after it shifts.

Pinging or timing chains ?

Dave

i am 90% sure it is the chains. try premium for a tank if it is still there than it is definatly the chains

Shouldn't have pinging with the 4.0s. I believe they have anti-knock sensors.

Yes this is true! But isn't engine knock and engine ping different from each other? I'm not sure...

If your statement is correct, how can my 2-3k rpm ping/knock be resolved by replacing the MAF, spark plugs and a fuel / intake system service?

I have not had this issue since the service???

Just trying to understand the situation...

Thanks!

J

try cleaning your maf

Have you check to see if the intake manifold bolts are torqued to specs. May need to replace the MAF with the pro-meter.:burnout: the ford MAF are prone to failing.

i am confused do you have the ohv or the sohc

Who? Me?

If me, I have a 99 SOHC. I have already performed the recall work for the cassetts and guides when I first bought her.

Plus replacing the MAF and an engine tune up fixed my 2-3k issues with ping. ;)

Cheers,

J
