Could someone give me a rough idea on cost/materials for a 94 XLT 4.0 Engine rebuild, Thanks.

Real rough ? $750 to $1000
 






www.napaonline.com lists master rebuild kits (for my '92) at $900-1000. And, just for reference, I just bought a rebuilt long block for my '92, and it cost me $2000-$2500 (with a three year warranty)
 






I spent $1200 at the machince shop (head work, and short block) and another $800-1000 for parts when I rebuilt mine 2 yrs ago- new pistons, cam, rockers, p-rods, lifters etc. I had the short block assembled, and I did the rest of the mock up, checking, assembly and installation.
 






So around $2500 + Labor kinda thing and how much faster am I looking at? What is the HP after all this, is it worth it in comparison to 5.0 swap and all that?
 






Faster than what? If you're currently running on three cylinders or something like that, you'll regain the lost horsepower, but a "normal" rebuild only brings the engine back to stock performance (160 HP @ 4200 RPM and 220 ft. lbs @ 2400 RPM). If you want to modify the engine (different camshaft, etc. Note that, from what I understand, there isn't enough metal to effectively bore and stroke the engine) Then you can gain some numbers from the stock design. Thing to remember, what you feel is torque, but most power increases are designed to increase HP. Most significant means of increasing HP do so, in part, by shifting the torque curve to a higher RPM.

How fast? depends on too many things other than power output of the engine- what you drive, tire size, gear ratios, both axle and transmission, type of transmission, etc. all go into how fast you go. How fast down the 1/4 mile, how fast ultimate top speed. How fast? is just too vague.

HP depends on how you build the engine-stock parts will get you back lost power, bored with a new cam and more compression, you can get into the 230-250 range, but its not just a rebuild- you will be spending more.

If you want a 5.0 then sell yours and buy one with a 5.0. It will be easier and cheaper than swapping yours- and with much lees headaches. Take a look at some of the threads on the 5.0 swap for some insight into whats involved.

You need to define what you want to do and what you have to determine how you want to build an engine, or swap a 5.o.

I would like to get more horsepower out of my 94 Explorer and make it quicker off the line. I want to be able to know when I have the pedal mashed and just give it a little more balls. Right now I just have a chip and intake and it still just isn't enough for me.

Rough estimate of prices on a rebuild with performance parts is what I meant to ask? (Injectors, Cams, Increased Compression, Port and Polish etc.)

I plan on running my same 3.73 LS along with the same transmission (electronic shiftkit, B&M shiftkit) and 32" Tires.

I would spend the money on some 4.30 or 4.56s then if you want some more umph off the line with 32" tires. Adding power to the engine isnt going to do anything for you with the 32" tires and 3.73 gears you are running.

Adding a cam, larger TB etc is going to raise the rpm at which the engine builds torque and HP so gearing will bring it back into range. If your engine is in basically good shape I would spend the 1000 or so for gears. As it stands you are out of the power band by probably 300 rpm or so already, and adding rpm to the power band isnt going to help you much until you get going.

I'd prefer not to regear, just seems like unnecessary money spending....I'm currently running 30" tires, how would those work with this new theoretical rebuild?
 






With 32's and 3.73's, you're gonna shorten the lifespan of your tranny. You'll notice a better improvement in regearing then you will with a rebuild. And you will probably spend the same amoutn of money, if not less.
