Engine running cool-Thermostat?

I did a search but didn't find anything. My 93 never really warms up. The needle doesn't reach the NORMAL on the gauge (A very scientific method of instrumentation.) My guess is that it is the thermostat. I looked at the engine, but couldn't even find where it is. Could anyone tell me where I can locate it? From the looks of things, it looks like its going to be a b!tch to work on anything in the engine compartment.

Any help would be appreciated.

Follow the upper radiator hose.. it connects to the thermostat housing at the top of the motor (front).. three 8mm bolts to take it off on a first generation Explorer.

Also, keep in mind that it could be warmed up, even if it reads low. I've seen some that are fully warmed up by the N in Normal and getting really hot by the time they get to M in normal.

Yes, it's not on the Top of the Manifold it's in the Front. It would be very easy to replace if Ford didn't decide to put the Belt tensioner right in it's path. In order to get the Upper left bolt out you have to take the tensioner off. Brilliant.

MAny of us have the same puzzled question as to why these run very low to ice cold when you would think it should be in the center of the gauge.
Mine runs at about the 'N'.
 






Mine typically runs between the o, and r. During the winters i keep a piece of cardboard over half the radiator to cut down on airflow, and keep it at a fairly constant temp although im guessing in florida cold weather shouldnt be the issue.
 






Yea.. thats what I mean.. its on the front of the engine, near the top (I wrote it backwards)..

I don't take off the tensioner, but it is a tight fit with a 1/4" drive and short extension with an 8mm socket.. I've done it enough times that it only takes me 20 minutes or so (including clean up)..

I don't put much into the temp gauge...but when warm it would always read alittle less then midway on the normal, but now it doesn't even reach the N.

I'll look for it behind the belt tensioner this afternoon, thanks for the info,
