I've been a mechanic most of my life, but I'm new to the Explorer. I've got an '01 that the timing chains crapped out on and ended up bending valves. I purchased an '03 for a replacement. While pulling the engines, I have noticed that there are quite a few differences. Will the '03 work in the '01 ?

Yeah, it'll work, any SOHC from 97-2010 will work, you just have to swap some stuff over, I know the valve covers move over, thermostat housing might, think 03s only have one sensor. There's a thread on here I've seen that explains how it's done, somebody will know what I'm talking about.

Ok, thanks Random.
I have another question.....Can anybody tell me if these are standard rod & main bearings???

I can't, they seemingly are at a glance, but I noticed something, those to me are dated late 2002, like your old engine is out a 2003, which isn't unlikely

^That's how I treat them, I have a drop in for my 01 when it's SOHC kicks it out a 99, when I get that one in one day, I'm subject to get another one.
