I currently have an explorer with about 170k miles on it. I'm going to have it for a while, and have been thinking about the life of the engine. I had the transmission rebuilt already, and I know that the timing chain will go at around 200k. What I'm wondering is what 4.0 SOHC engines are compatible? Previous gen SOHC engines, sport trac engines? Really trying to find a low mileage one.

Keep going!

There is a lot of negative stuff out there about 4.0 SOHC timing chains. But these are really pretty solid engines. I have 415k on mine, and just recently replaced the tensioners and always keep oil changed. I do not think you can predict your chain and tensioners will fail at 200k. And it is not smart money. Just keep your oil changed, keep your tensioners up, and keep going. Engine replacement is an expensive way to address a potential, anticipated problem, especially if you have no rattle or current issues. Good luck with any decision.

I think you just made my decision for me. 415k? Damn lol. I just heard that most chains will go at 200k. I'll have it looked at when I get it inspected in a few months, since I'm only 18 and don't really know what the signs of a bad tensioner are. Thank you so much for the quick reply, and have a good night.

Signs of tensioner or guide problems: you will hear the chain(s) rattle, especially at start up and cold starts. Your 4.0 probably has four sets of chains, and four sets of tensioners. IF YOU do not hear rattle, keep your oil changed regularly with good oil, and rest easy. Engine swapping is not cost effective preventative maintenance. Enjoy your Ford!
