- '91 XLT
I recently became the owner of a 91 explorer XLT. It has a 5 speed transmission and about 82,000 miles. It's in almost perfect condition, with the exception of a few leaky gaskets. So far, I've had little problems with the x. It's a great vehicle, and I very much enjoy owning it.
The Trucks and SUV's that I enjoy driving are the ones out on the roads in the worst conditions, the ones far off road in the dirt and mud, the ones with tons of hp's under the hood and just cant be stopped. I feel good knowing that my x can do things and drive places no other cars can. But... the one thing the x doesn't do for me is power. I feel weak driving such a tank with only 165 hp.
I've invested too much money, and I like the x too much to sell it. That's not one of my options right now. I've also considered greatly modifying the engine, but I feel I'd just be dumping more and more money with small results. There just arn't as many performance engine mods out there for the 4.0 liter as I would like to be. In the end, I'm not looking to have my X totally an off-road vehicle. I'm not looking for a race car either. The only mods I'm looking for are a huge, powerful engine and a nice sounds system (which I have).
What I'm thinking of investing in, in the next year, is a new engine. I think by making a swap with a bigger engine, I will get what I'm looking for. But, I don't know much about what I need to get started, and in the end, what am I planning to invest in all together. Or, is an engine swap a good idea.
