I have done many searches on "Engine Pinging", and yet to find my problem. Here's the deal. Under a load only, my engine will so call 'Tick" and do it until the gas pedal is released. This is not a spark nock form cheap gas, nor a carbon build up! If anyone has any ideas please let me know! I have put up with this enough!
Thanks for all your help guys. Manifold? Intake manifold? Anything will help. Thanks Seth!

have you checked your oil level?

Have you cleaned the MAS? Checked vacuum and EGR lines for leaks?

My engine does it too, I think it's just the fuel injectors ticking.

Seth, you find anything out yet?

My '97 is doing it as well. At idle or even in Park but when the gas pressed there is no noise. There is also no noise (or very little) once I get up to speed. But, there is a ticking when I'm accelerating (in gear) that sounds to be right above my feet in the engine compartment. I've been told that there are some flaps or something in the exhaust manifold to help the engine warm up faster and they can rattle at times....

That would be,,,,,,

That would be, A Vac leak, most likly in this engine, cauzed by a faulty intake gasket, try retorqing the lower intake manifold bolts to spec, if that doesnt stop the problem, time for a replacment gasket.
Good luck
Isaac

I agree with isaac, retighten your intake manifold bolts to spec. It should cure it

mine does it, and its the lifters. i work with 2 other guys with 5.0 X's, one a 96 and one a 98 and they both do it too. a way to check if its lifters; next time you change your oil, add a quart of really thick oil treatment like motor honey. if it quites down for a little while, then its lifters.

DO THIS AND IT WILL GO AWAY!

ok i had this problem, I took out the injectors and got then tested and cleaned, I got a print out of that they were spraying befor and after, befor i was spraying 86ml on all 6 now all of them are spraying 98-100ml, THis only costed 14 dollars an injector the total for the job was 84 for cleaning and 24 for the gasket kit.

my first bet would be detonation. it could be a header bolt leak, my friends 95 GT is missing a header bolt and when he gets off the gas it sounds like that. My car has an exhaust leak in the header connection on the passenger side, and it pingins when i let off the gas. The only other think i can think of, is something broke internally and is floating around......but ltes hope its not that.

if you have a ticking noise under a load or acceleration it most likely your EGR Valve. Listen for the sound and see if its coming from the passenger side, if it is, its probably that.

Happy Easter to ALL

if it doesn't sound like something is breaking, I'd guess it's just the normal lifter ticking that lots of us have. I don't worry about it, some people do, maybe you should tighten something if it's bothering you.....

keep in mind,,

alot of the ppl that post here dont seem to be to "mechanicly inclined", and realy arnt sure as to what there saying,
for instance"it's probably lifters," "if it bothers you maybe you should tighten something up", in the 4.0 liter Engine that your vehical has, when it comes to lifters and valvetrain,, you cannot "tighten" anything up. the rockers are NON ajustable, and there is no way of taking up slack, that is why there "hydrolic" lifters.

Retorqe the lower intake manifolds bolts an go on with life.
Keep in mind some of the ppl posting on here probably couldnt change there own oil without directoins.

Note: In this statement, all "truly mechinicly inclined ppl", are not included in statements made, and or other mecanics, Respectfully.

the "tighten something up" was a joke, hence the quotes, (sorry inflection is difficult to portray in typing). The just of what I was saying was if it doesn't sound like somethings breaking, don't worry about it.

Mr. Jsdean:

If you in the future have these problems with your engine, I urge you NOT to ignore the problem untill something breaks.

The problem were talking about here can and WILL lead to engine damidge.

its kinda hard to diagnose engine problem sounds over the web. what may be ticking to me may be knocking to you and may be detonation to someone else. all three of these are very distinctive sounds to me, but may be hard to describe in type. if its lifters, the only solution is to replace them. im not saying thats what it is; i cant hear it from my house. he asked for possible diagnoses and i think we all gave him some good things to look for.

mine is very noticeable...and it sounds as if it's coming from right in front of my feet but out in the engine compartment. i've got a few other slight issues as well, so i'm taking it to the dealer this week to have it put on the computer. while i'm there i'm going to have them clean the injectors and adjust the computer/speedometer to accomadate the new tires.

btw, i'm mechanically inclined....there's not much other than rebuilding the transmission or a complete engine overhaul that i can't tackle myself...

Actually it's not hard to describe the sounds in type but people are reluctant to do it just like they are reluctant to make the sounds when they are talking about them... LOL... People thing they sound dumb if they describe it in detail or make the noise. ;)

In short don't worry about how cool you sound when describing a noise because what really matters is an accurate description. :D
