Engine won't start :-/

i have recently purchased a cheap car to use to go to and from work and whatnot. I bought it and the guy said it won;t start and it had no starter. Well, I got the new starter installed, new battery, checked all fluids, changed oil, and today I go to start it and it won;t start...it won;t even crank. I hear a sound like the starter engauging, then nothing. Any ideas what it might be? Battery cables did not have a ton of corrosion, oil was dirty, coolant was low. It had bvene sitting for 3 years. Could the pistons be stuck from sititng so long or might it be a fried engine? :-/

If it's been sitting for 3 years the rings and cylinder walls will have rust on them. This is called sit seized. Take the plugs out and pour or squirt about a half a cup of tranni fluid in each cylinder. Let it sit for a day or so. This will dissolve the rust. Try turning by hand with a wrench on the crank. It should free it up. Drain and change the oil and filter after that though. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Thanks I'll try that....too bad it says I gotta take off the upper intake manifold to get to the rear spark plugs (@#$% front wheel drive cars)
If I can;t get it to work it will be for sale for parts...92 Merc. Sable 3.8 if anyone's interested

if there is any other suggestions it would be cool too all I knwo about the engine is he did say it had a bad head gasket but they had it repaired...

i tried putting atf in the cylendars but the engine still won;t crank. There are no plugs in it and it has a new starter and battery. when I took out the plugs 3 seemed to have surface rust, so I know there is rust in the cylendars, but the ATF did not break the pistons free. Any other suggestions? I am worried I'll burn out this starter if i keep trying and it was $140.

Like falls guy said. put a Johnson bar with socket on the crankshaft pulley and turn it in either direction. This will tell you if the engine is seized. If it is... work it back and forth; now that you have atf in the cylinders. If your crank turns barely ( it won't be easy with the plugs still in) then your laughing. But work the crank for a good ten minutes and then let sit for an hour then work it again then try the starter again..good luck

Can I cause any problems by putting too much force on the crankshaft bolt? I accidently busted off one of the wheel studs by standing on the wrench, and just don;t want to do something like that to the crankshaft, if thats even possable.

Well, I tried turning the crankshaft bolt and ended up just loosening/tightening the bolt. The engine would not turn. If I had enough force to tighten and loosen the bolt does that mean I'm pretty much screwed in terms of making this engine work?
