Hi Again, not sure if I have big trouble or not?
I figured I would check out my 4wd today, especially shift on the fly. Well, went down the road at around 30 miles per hour and shifted from 2wd to 4 auto. In about 3 seconds both the 4wd and 4low lights started to flash. When I came to a stop, I placed tranny in park and turned switch back to 2WD. I then switched it to 4auto and in about 2 seconds just the 4wd light stayed on. 4low works fine.
So it seems that the 2 lights start to flash only if I shift on the fly but ok when I'am stopped. By the way when I pulled over to check the driveshaft, it was locked with the front, meaning that mechanically it was ok I guess. I tried to see if I could get the front wheels to prove there were going to have traction but the road surface was not slippery enough.
Please let me know what you think.

P.S. by the way, before I got the transfer case changed my old one in 2WD would lock up the front driveshaft and it would not free-wheel like it does now. I just realized that today.

I haven't had this problem, but I'm pretty sure that the lights flashing are caused by some malfunction sensed by the GEM (generic electronic module). If you have a scan tool, you should be able to recover the codes that are causing the flashing indicators.

If the guys that worked on your transfer case weren't such a bunch of morons, I would suggest having them scan for codes because it could be related to something they did. In your case, I would try to find someone else with a scanner that can read GEM diagnostic codes.

Oh yes, my X is never going inside that shop again. I know it is something to do with the electrical because with the old case as I shifted on the fly...just the 4wd light would come on. I'm not even sure if it is worth worrying about. I cant spend any more cash on her for a while.

They probably only messed with the connector at the transfer case. I would look at this connector carefully and make sure there are no bent pins, the shell isn't broken, etc. The signals that indicate the position of the shift motor are in that connector, along with the driveshaft speed sensor signals, the power for the shift motor and the power for the clutch coil. If there is a bad connection for one of those wires, the GEM might interpret that as a malfunction.

Good idea, it has to be something they messed with. I doubt it is inside the transfer case? Is that electrical plug just a simple dissconnect? Mabe it is in the shift motor? I wonder if I can drive truck with shift motor off of case while I work on it? Anyway tomorrow I will check out all the connections and let you know if I find anything.

I'm about 99% certain that it is something they messed with.;)

If they weren't such idiots, I would suggest making them fix it, but youre probably better off fixing it yourself. The only connection inside the transfer case is the clutch coil power (brown wire) all other connections are on the outside.

Well, like I said, I will take a look as soon as I can, I wish I had thought about it earlier as I was under her tonight. I posted a question about the 2wd mode on a previous post....maybe you know?

Thanks, DF
