'97 Ford Explorer XLT 5.0
I have a '97 XLT with the 4.0 SOHC motor. I am having alot of problems with the exaust that are probaly all related. The rear support for the tail pipe rusted off so my tail pipe bangs on my leaf springs over all bumps, and now when i hit the gas im getting a sounds from the muffler as there is a leak in it. I want to ditch the crapy castrated stock muffler because i noticed that it is dual exaust in, but single out, i want to run dual all the way back out both sides of my bumper, i have a towing pkg, so keep that in mind.. What would do you think would be the best, cheapest way to upgrade considering i am in school and have a min. wage paying job.
Thanks alot.
Clay:)

LOL have you searched?

And I'm going to delete your other post thread "Exaust. HELP" as it is about the same exact topic!

HA yea.. i wasnt sure.. i really needed an answer because im taking it to a dealer tomorrow to have the entier truck looked at, suspention, drivetrain, hoses, anything and everything under the sun.. Yea, ive looked alittle mostly at local parts store advance auto parts, because im on a tight budget. Do you think i should custon fabricate the system myself and find differens ways to pipe it along? or should i just stick with the stock muffler and have ford replace it?
ha, thanks tho

No i mean search as in search the forum for your answers.

If you can custom fabricate an exhaust yourself, then why not?

OH ok, well.. ive done alittle, but havent really found anything, theres too many things. But yea. i probly could pull it off with a couple buddies and my step dad. but if i can find a way to consume less time, ill take that.

After getting quotes approaching $500 from shops, I just got the parts and did mine for ~$130. Not a big deal at all. I went with the stock single exhaust, so if you've got your heart set on duals, it will likely be more. Given my recent experience with a dealer, I wouldn't be in a hurry to go to one.

Yea.. there giving me a free go over of my truck. so im not going to complain. i cant wait to see what that want me to get. im in NO hurry to deal with a dealer. All right, thanks alot.. I dont really have a heartset on dual, but i love the sound of a nicely displaced V6 truck with dual exaust.

Do you have a welder? The easiest thing IMO would be to buy a new stock muffler ($60 at napa for just the muffler) and a stock tail pipe (another $30) and then buy another tailpipe that you could splice in to make it a dual exhaust. Have you looked under the truck yet? It's gonna be a bit of a challenge to get around that spare tire without using bending equipment.

Yea, ive been under there. ive routed it, i would buy an asortment of pipes and uber carefully have it make it around.. my friends got a welder, so thats no problem. im planned on welding that, but im really concerned because if i stick with one exaust, it goes dual in, and sinle out, that makes it really hard to work with aftermarket parts..

Duals on the SOHC V6 is often a bad idea, unles you plan on bolting in a power-adder in the near future. From what I've read, 2.25" tubing all the way out the back is just fine. A good, low restriciton muffler shouldn't ever cost you more than $75 IMO, and if you bolt it all in with cheap clamps and then drive it to a reputable shop for welding (or diy) you'll save enough $ to get yourself a sub!
Best of Luck

Thats what i planned on doing anyway. im just having trouble finding an aftermarket exaust that has that dual in single out setup!

it really just depends how much is under the body and rear axel on the drivers side. Its gonna cost me about 450 to 500 for duals on my 5.0. With a muffler. Have heard the spacing on the 4.0 sohc is a little snug there. I would bring it to an aftermarket shop not the dealer and have them check it out. They will do it for much less then the dealer.
