My '02 Explorer has started doing a kind of jerky sway at about 60-65mph, especially when I let off the gas & coast. It does it to a lesser degree at about 45mph as well. Feels a bit like driving on grooved pavement, but it happens on ungrooved too. Tires are OK and properly inflated; roads are dry here. This has been going on for only about 4 weeks -was OK before then. Any ideas?

With it being a 2002, have your shocks ever been changed?

Good suggestion. However, it turns out it was a bad wheel bearing! The left front wheel bearing was self-destructing, causing the sense of lack of control. The shop test-drove the Explorer on a local road at up to about 55mph and didn't detect the problem, but my spouse took it out on the freeway and noticed it immediately. Once it was fixed it drove fine.
