im thinking about getting one of those exhaust flame kits. I have dual flowmaster exhaust and i think it would look so cool! But i talked with one of the manufacter's and they said i would have to gut the cat converter or get rid of it all together. I live in florida and there are no emmision inspections or any laws about not having a cat converter, but will this really hurt my performance I dont really care about gas mileage or anything like that so if i gut my converters will it hurt my performance greatly or no at all. has anyone here ever gutted there converters, i have a 94 and the converters have never been messed with so their probably pretty messed up anyway

You can't do the flames with a fuel injected engine I thought... at least that is what they said on Trucks!....

As long as there is no O2 sensor after the cat, you should be able to remove it... If I didn't have to pass emissions, I would get rid of mine...

If you're seriously thinking about this, don't do it with gas from the motor and by gutting your cats. You're gonna want to inject fuel directly into the tailpipes right before the sparkplugs. Propane is actually great to use for this and is safer and easier to work with than gasoline.

i also think there is away you can plumb a way of dropping some gas from another source ( like small fuel cell ) right b4 where ur gunna put the spark plug that way u wouldnt have to gut the cats...............

jsut an idea

peace

i've gutted a few, not on my explorer, its pretty easy, but on my explorer theres two and its all welded together so it'll be harder, just get like a long tire iron and a hammer and "chisel" away the inside, its kinda like a ceramic material so its not that hard to break up, and if your ex is like mine (more than likely) it has a second 02 sensor after the cats, so i'm not too sure what the computer will do when all that polluted exhaust goes through the system, but i have a feeling that it wont do any harm to the performance, dont quote me on that though, i'd look into it a little more

the kit im thinkin about gettin is real simple all it is is a computer type thing that sends a electricity(not constant) to a set of spark plugs in the tailpipes which burns off excess gases after you rev the motor a bit and its controlled by a button you push. its extremely safe ya i thought about propane injection but i have some resservations about it and i dont want to do anything thats going to harm me or my truck the thought of free flowing propane traveling through my truck then being ignited just worries me a bit. but with the kit they said the cat converters might block alot of the exhaust gases and it would not flame

whats with the explores having 4 cats? at least i do...i'd like to gut em but i don't wanna screw up the O2 sensors...is there a way to bypass the o2 sensors?

hey
iceman if u end up doing the flames ull have to email or PM me and ill have to come by and see it i think it would be cool

PEACE

If you gut or delete the cats you're gonna have to do something about fooling the computer into thinking the O2 sensor is still functioning normally. Also, without an adjustable fuel pressure regulator you're probably not gonna send enough fuel through the exhaust to ignite. Besides the fact that this could harm your motor and the rest of your exhaust.

If you're gonna do it, go the injection method and keep your cats.

The flames look cool and all but in most jurisdictions they are illegal. If you do it make sure that you don't get caught. I know that here in B.C. they have a regulation specifically covering any device that causes flames to come out the exhaust.

ya in a city i could see them havin laws like that but down here in south florida the cops dont care cause everyones a redneck , (most of the cop cars are lifted broncos and f150's):D :D I think im gonna go with the propane injection they guarrentee 5ft flames with that kit

My friend gutted the cat on his 95 X. I really don't think it did anything performance-wise, but personally I think it sounds kinda bad when he revs it.

There are divices (Search this site and the web) that send a fake O2 sensor signal, so you can remove the O2s after the cats. Improper O2 configuration, or gutted cats, will generate a CEL.

On custom exhausts, the 4 cats are often reduced to two. Four just makes your X cleaner. Contrary to popular beleif, cats do nothing to restrict exhaust flow. KEEP THEM INTACT, or replace with new ones.

i Only have 2 cats and 2 o2 sensors the sensors are on the headers there arent any o2 sensors after the cats, I ordered the propane injection kit anyway.
