1996 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6
Hello all! This is my first post and I should have joined so much sooner! I love the site and the people on here help each other so much. Wish I worked with people moreand like that lol. Anyways on to the topic:
For starters: I have a 1996 Explorer XLT 4.0 v6 (I believe the OHV? Correct me if Im wrong)
It all began with a tune up... I have had my explorer for two years and never really had much of an issue. Last week I decided to do a routine tune up because on the way to work I noticed a skip. I replaced all 6 spark plugs, cables, changed oil, checked transmission fluid. Started her up, ran smooth as can be but i noticed it was still rather loud and a big deposit of carbon on the passenger side by the exhaust manifold.
Had a friend look at it and he informed me that I have an exhaust leak and the my cel on the dash must have gone out(which it must have within the last few weeks). Over the week I gather the supplies needed, pb blaster, (soaked the bolts over 5 days) replacement bolts, a new manifold incase the old one was cracked a gasket and a torch.
yesterday I spent all day fighting those bolts to find out that the factory had placed red locktight on them hence they were so difficult.
Snapped one bolt down at the threads trying to break it free.
heres where the issue started. I used a propane torch to heat the snapped bolt up to use with my vice grips to grt the bolt out. (The top middle bolt btw) while waiting for it to heat up, I heard a pop inside the engine (sounded almost dirrectly behind the bolt at least in the area of it). Then smoke slowly began to pour out of the middle exhaust port. At the time i figured it was residual pb blaster somewhere and didnt think twice.
Continued on with the rest of the project. I couldnt get that snapped bolt out and im playing on using my drill to get it out on tuesday. Once everything was put back together, i cranked her up to hear the opposite of what i imagined. Ticking, a little skipping at low rpms, and smoke out of what seemed to be both sides of the block?!?!
Im at a losf fellas. Any help would be appricated. This truck is my pride and joy and my family and I are on a tight budget due to the birth of my first daughter so Im trying my best.

When you heat up metals hot enough sometimes some kinds of them will pop. I don't see how it could of gone in your block though. Never know though.

Im worried that a valve seal or something in there got heat as well and when it poped it moved or broke and now my engine is gone. I need some guidance lol.

"smoke out of what seemed to be both sides of the block" that's the part I don't get because it should just be one side not other side also, but also was thinking maybe your headgasket is shot now and that's why the smoke and not running right.

Ding ding ding jus you are a winner!!!
Had a buddy come over help my rip through everything with a quickness, got to the head gasket and about 2inches from where i was heating it the gasket was look a little of compared to the condition to the rest of it. Replaced and cranked her up, good as new!!!
The smoke could have appeared to come from both sides due to the cross breeze we were having and the fan from the engine blowing.

Thanks again everyone!
