There is a steel pipe under my hood that is broken and making a loud exhaust noise. I think it has something to do with the exhaust return, but I can't find it my Haynes repair manual. It had a cloth covering on it and comes from down under the engine to a spot near the oil check. What is it called so that I can get a new one?

WAIT!!!! I'm stupid!!! Its a 94 not 91!!!!

Sounds like the EGR tube. You'll have to go to the dealer, although I know you can get them online. Lemme find where I got mine.

Edit: Found it

It's $60, but it's the only place I've ever been able to fine it without going to the dealership. Dealership cost was $120. You will have to call for it, that site doesn't have it set up to order online, but that's where I got mine and it worked fine. Good Luck!

Edit again: on second though, if you have access to a welder you might be able to fix it. But if you ever take off the valve, chances are you'll break it.

If it is the EGR tube, I suggest you soak the connections and bolts with PBBlaster before trying to remove it.

Thanks! I called them and they are checking it out for me. There is no pic on the web page and he lists it available for a 4.9 rather than a 4.0 so he is calling the manufacturer to see what's up.

The broken tube is rusted off right at the nut on the lower end, so I am guessing that it won't be repairable. Also, the little tube that comes off the upper part is rusting out around the weld, too. I think it is just time to get a new one.

BTW, would this problem also cause the check engine light to come on?

update:

it was the right one!!! yeahhhh!! And, it was only $50.45 inculding shipping!!! It will be here in about 4 days.

I'll get the PBBlaster and give it a try. update to follow in about a week. :)

I am phsyced!!!! Thanks for the help!!!!

off topic...hey let me ask you a question sstewart777.....your first name would not happen to be "scott" would it ?????...got a reason for asking.......

Congrats on getting that tube, and yes, that could be a cause of the CEL. Have fun getting that old one off.... The only way I could get the nut off the exhaust manifold was to break the tube off there and use and impact gun on it. Took it right off once I figured it out. For the EGR side, just get a big wrench, and it should come off.

S is for Scott

Yup! That's me. I presume that we know each other? Send me a private message. Thanks!

Hi all!

Got the ERG tibe in the mail yesterday! Its the right one, thanks guys!

Now I need your help again. The part that the EGR tube connects to on the top is rusting out, too. It is not the part that the EGR directly connects to, but rather the round disk looking thing on the other side. It looks like it is all one piece, but there is so much rust I can't really tell.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Thanks db222. I was away for a couple days and tmrw I head out for 2 weeks. I research that part online and order it while I'm gone so that I have it when I get back.

Thanks so much for the help. I really appreciate all you guys taking the time to help a newby like me!

UPDATE:

Well, today I got courageous and tackled the EGR tube and the EGR Valve (I've been away for a couple of weeks). Yesterday I hit everything with PB Buster and today everything came off easily, except the nut that holds the EGR tube onto the exhaust. That took about 5 more hits with the PB Buster, 1 hour of sitting and then I used a 27mm 1/2 drive socket to get it off by accessing it thought the wheel well (the EGR tube had rusted off right there so the nut was accessible with a socket). After I got the initial turn from there I was able to move to above and get it off with the socket from there.

All went together fairly well and I took it out for a spin. The CEL went out for a moment and then came back on, but the ex seems to go just fine. I took the (-) lead of the battery for a couple of minutes and put it back on. Now the CEL comes on about 15 seconds after start up. It runs smooth and doesn't seem to have any obvious problems.

I looked around at some other threads and I'm thinking it could be the DPFE. The hose connections on that were pretty nasty with white powdery stuff on them. The small hose connector was kinda eaten away.

I'll take it to Autozone in the next few days to see if they can scan it for me.
