What's the difference between a catback system, and if I were to buy a muffler ang go to a shop and have them install it. I was looking at truckpreformance.com, and you can get a borla muffler for about 85 bucks, and other threads make it sound like having someone do some custom work is pretty cheap, well compared to the 400 or so for a catback system from borla. So I am assuming you get something more with a catback system?

If you have the shop bend custom tubing ftom the cat to your muffler and out the rear, that is a cat back system. Usually the preferred method too, by the way.

don't spend too much on a catback system. Regular flowmasters will give you almost the same power for a cheaper price. since yours is a 98(if its a SOHC) it should already have dinomax highflow cats (stock).
 






Usually the main difference between buying a full setup and having your tailpipe made is that most muffler shops can't mandrel bend tubing in-house. Thus you get a slightly smaller radius on the bends. However, the muffler is the main bottleneck, and a .1" difference in tailpipe diameter isn't gonna make that much of a difference. Though with the bolt-on catback kits you can install them yourself and don't need to take it to a shop.

Unless you want to have it welded, right? What's the difference in having it bolted on and having it welded on?
 






The prebuilt catback kits usually have a flange on the end that bolts right up to the cats with a gasket. If you take it to a muffler shop and have them do it custom, they'll usually eliminate the stock flange and just weld everything together. Welding everything together is usually better, but many of those full kits don't require any welding and can be put on in your driveway.

A welded exhaust is by far the means of choice. I personally would never have any non=welded components on an exhaust system.
 






I didnt know that my 98 had high flow cats. thats cool.

Your factory exhaust wasn't welded.
 












has anyone put hi-flow cats on their X?
 






mike...the stock cats are pretty high flow...more than enough flow ever needed for the v6
 






yeh thats what ive heard. i would think with even more highflow cats i would have zero backpressure

Be careful when reducing back pressure too much on the 4.0's, as you can end up losing torque.

How does one know when one has too much backpressure? What are the signs?
 






It will back fire a lot, right? I know with my setup I can hear the backpressure when I let off the gas. It sounds good.
 






backpressure = good
non-pressure = bad

if you open en exhuast system up too much you loose back pressure. its good to find a "median" with yer exhuast. not to open and not to restricted.

i think im going to get rid of my non-delta 40 series. i found a better muffler.
the dynomax ultraflow muffler. has twice the cfms.
wich means twice as loud.
 






Does a 93 have cats on it? If i want to add a cold air intake should i add an exhaust? with an intake would a catback or just a muffler be better?

your 93 has cats on it unless they have been removed. Cat back is best.
