I would recomment 2 1/3" pipe, no larger.

Good luck....

id go with a 2.25" pipe. i had 2.5" pipes on my previous systems, and i actually could feel the slight low end torque loss, and it was also louder (unless you want that; though, the explorer isnt one of those vehicles that can afford to lose low end torque.) when i get my new system put on in about a month or so, im going with 2.25" pipes, so i wont be able to tell you the real results until then, but generally, i would say that most people go with 2.25" pipes, then some have 2.5" pipes, and a couple of guys have 3" pipes.

I have 2 1/2" piping from the cat on back. It workd great for me.

thanks for the help

one more thing what should i go with the 2 in 1 out pipe or the 2 in 2 out muffler what will have the best sound and make the most power

I would recommend a 1 in 1 out with 2 1/2" piping.

Good luck......

I agree with Aldive on the single outlet. Most of the guys with the V6 say that a dual setup will have a loss of torque. I have the V8, so I went with dual 2 1/2" pipes and it fells like I gained horsepower and torque. The V8 exhaust is so restrictive that the duals really help. If you do go with duals (for the cool look) I'd stick with 2 1/4" pipes. You should be fine then. I have a pics link in my sig with some exhaust pics. Check em out.
