I think different size tips give off different sounds.
Exit locations create different sounds in the interior and sometimes the exterior when the vehicle is in motion. (I think the doppler effect plays into the sound due to the noise being fairly directional.)
I think where the pipes exit change the sound quite a bit in an explorer.
Tips heading straight back under the bumper will have the pipes running under the cargo floor. The cargo floor is sound deadened and carpeted with padding.
Tips exiting the sides place the pipes and tips behind the plastic interior panels, behind the wheel wells, right where there is an open cavity for the sound to resonate.
