I guess the 2+ weeks of driving around on salt roads, has finally taken its turn. It appears my muffler has developed a very noisy crack. Heres my question. I am getting a new exhaust(with muffler) in about 3 weeks, and dont want to fork out the money for a muffler to use for such a short time. However this noise is driving me nuts. I can place a towel over the crack, and it shuts right up. Heres my question. What can I use to temporarily patch this thing up?? I was thinking duct tape(the cure all) but figured the muffler would get too hot and melt it. Does anyone have any suggestions?? If so, please speak up!

JB Weld!

Ok,
I was thinking that. How easy/hard is it to apply, and how well does it hold up?? Im assuming that it can still be bought at pep boys/advance auto, correct?

Yea JB weld is very easy to use, you just have to mix two compounds, and its just like glue!

Yeah.. you can pick it up pretty much anywhere. I'd just get in there with a wire brush, clean it up a little, and slap it on. It should work great.

Cool deal! Thanks for the quick replys.

Im now looking at either jb weld, or muffler putty. Which one would y'all reccomend.

i once used some pipe clamps and some asbestos cloth... worked great! but good luck finding asbestos cloth nowadays!

Go to Lowes and buy a small tub of chimney cement. I had a rusted out cat about 10 years ago on my first car and this is the only thing that would not burn off.

Quick note on the "Muffler Wrap" available at Pep-Boys.
This item works about as well as a solar powered flashlight. The SOB wouldnt even stick to itself!
I ended up just getting a new muffler. MUCH MUCH better. :)

DUCT TAPE

For 3-weeks it will work. My buddies dual exhaust on his firebird busted when some girl drove over something.

We used Duct Tape to hold it on for the ride home.

i used jb weld but it fell right through in no time. i was thinking tho about that metal tape that they use for vents, plumbing, etc.

Some muffler patches work, others suck. The ones that work are in an orange package made by "Victor" and sold at autozone. They have a gray goop, some metal cheesecloth, some insulation and some metal straps.... you basically use the goop on the edge of the hole to seal the insulation to it, and the metal (held together by bolts) keeps the junk on the muffler. ugly as hell, messy as ever, but it works.

Use high heat duct tape. You should be able to find it at Lowes, Home Depot, or your local HVAC wholesaler.
