Needed 4x4 this AM and when I pushed the button nothing happened. Auto would not engage (I was sliding on ice). Tried stopping, put in neutral, engaged brake, and pushed button, still nothing, not even a light. Did not hear anything trying to engage. Checked all the fuses and they are all good. Any ideas??

Auto?

Which of the three buttons did you press to engage 4wd? (and by they way, welcome!)

First, I tried the 4x4 high, then I stopped and tried the 4x4 low. Nothing will engage.

Sounds like it might be the 4x4 control module.

Greetings! I've got the same problem as of last week. Someone mentioned that the motor (on transfer case?) freezes up on Explorers fairly commonly...Is that true? How do I check? No fuses blown as far as I can tell.

Replaced 4x4 CM

Well, after doing quite a bit of research on this forum, (and wasting $90.00 at the mechanic) I was convinced that my problem was my 4x4 control module. A while back, I had to replace my battery and after that, no 4x4. (A common problem in '02's I have come to realize) Thanks to everyone on this forum for all the details and instructions! I ordered my new CM from trademotion.com for $170.00 INCLUDING s&h. (Mechanic wanted $500.00 to fix) I replaced it myself. Took it on a test drive and wa-la...it worked! Not that it matters, but did I mention I am an unmechanicly inclined woman!

Glad it worked for ya'!

As the '02-'05s start to age, we're seeing this type of problem more and more. I'm glad these forums are around to help people with problems like these! If the OEMs were smart, they'd use forums like this to better their future designs!
