Looking forward to getting a lot of information to help with my builds.....I love square bodied trucks and have a cream puff 1989 Bronco II I'm going to build up and just bought a 1994 Explorer XLT 4x4 as a parts truck but the Explorer is almost too nice to part out. Only has 142K miles and passed California smog no problem. I bought it for the axles but now I'm a little conflicted.

Any Gen 1 Explorer specialists in NorCal that do build ups or rebuilds?....please let me know.

That's not tooooooo far!!
You can get a dana 35 ttb out of any explorer, don't cut up a beautiful 94!
You should get a disc brake rear axle from a 95+ anyways, skip that drum brake 94 setup

The best front axle for your B2 would be a 96-97 Ranger D35 ttb with the dual piston brake calipers
The best rear axle would be a 95-01 Explorer rear with disc brakes
Then swap in a 95 Explorer no frills brake master cylinder and explorer brake booster.....your BII would be right at home setup like this.

Welcome to EF!!!!!!

Oh trust me....you have caused me to read many pages of your threads and builds....Nice work!! I like your attention to detail.....But, you are also going to be a bad influence on my pocketbook :D

The 1994 Explorer I purchased needs a LOT of little things to it to make it a decent driver. But the drive train (other than the stock front hubs) seems to be in great shape. It shifts in and out of 4wd and 4low with no issues, but when all 4 tires are off the ground you can hear a high frequency clicking noise coming from the front hub. The front driveshaft and drivers side half shaft turns but the front tires do not...so I'm assuming it's the stock hubs.

Regarding the rear axle brakes, I agree discs make a lot of sense but those damn old school drums seem to hold better when using the parking brake...at least in my experience. So for now, I'm ok with drums. Finding a 35 TTB out of a 96-97 Ranger would be nice...but super rare truck and parts out here. IIRC, it is possible to swap over to a Dana 44 outer with the dual piston setup, correct? If so, I may do that in the future. My plan is to run a tall skinny 33" tire with 4.88's. I'm not sure what I'm going to do for differentials yet. ARB's and Truetracs are on my radar.

Also, I found that the front leather seats in the 94' Explorer are very comfortable (but they are thrashed in my donor vehicle)....do you know if the front seats for the Gen 1 Explorer bolt into the 89' Bronco II? If so, I'll keep my eyes open for a clean set as I really like them with the adjustable lower thigh, etc.

Obviously I have a ton of questions for you. Also, do you also do custom builds in Idaho?

Cheers,
George
