I have a 98 Explorer sport and as you all know the sport model only has 2 seats in the back. Has anyone ever taken the rear seat out of a 4 door Explorer and put it into a Sport? The Sport and the XLT models are the same width, so i would think it would work, but i dont know if it would mount the same. Anyone ever tried?

I dont think it will fit. In the sport the seats are righ above the axle, and are narrower I believe.

Yep that's 100% correct. 4-door seats won't fit.

Hi My98xplorer:

I've looked into it, but it would be a lot of work. Sports & 4drs use a completely different rear seat. The mounting points are different. The dimensions are different. The folding mechanism is different. All of this is necessary because the rear seat in a Sport is almost between the rear wheelwells, whereas a 4dr's rear seat is in front of them a lot more. The rear seat in a Sport is at or above the rear cargo floor because it has to clear the hump in the floor for the rear axle. This necessitates the linkage that flips the seat bottom up when folding down the seatback. In a 4dr, the seat is low enough that the seatback can simply fold down onto it. Then, of course, the width is different, as are the hardpoints for mounting the seat belt anchors.

The only way I figure it would work is if you could take the folding mechanism from the Sport and adapt it to the (probably narrowed) seat sections from a 4dr. Then you would have to have the existing seatbelt anchors moved and new ones for the middle passenger added. When you were done, the rear seats would only be usable by kids, unless someone wanted a seatbelt enema. I decided not to do it.

Regards,
John.
