well, two weaks, a new camshaft position sensor and $1050 later i was able to get my explorer back from CT automotive and ford dealership. they also tried getting rid of the ping but the mechanic said that he did not know any other cure for the infamous ping. he injected the car with some cleaner i am not quite sure what. my father is debating on whether to put a new or rebuilt engine in the explorer or to just sell it. i was wondering what you all would do if you were in my situation? i do like my explorer but will the tranny last another 50000 miles there seems to be just too many if's and i really cannot afford another repair like this. what would i get for it if i tried to sell it and if you all need to see pics i have some (but i dont know hop to post them)

How odd. 91-94 Xplorers do not have camshaft position sensors.

Are you sure you dont mean a crankshaft position sensor? Its about 40.00 or so and takes litererally 10 minutes to change tops!

What was the $1050 spent on?

And don't give up on it simply because of the ping issue. It sounds like they ran something like Seafoam through it to decarbon the cylinders. That cures many people's ping, but not everyone. The others are dealt with by cleaning the MAF or finding the vacuum leak (lower intake manifold is one common place).

nope there is a camshaft position sensor on the 94 and it cost 400 for the part alone. ford dealership dignostics part, labor and professional cleaning of the injectors. = 1050 i went looking for seafoam today and drove 30 miles to 3 or 4 different places to finally hear they are sold out. i will try again tomorrow

well that just proves that your books is wrong. call automotive parts store and ask for a CPS for a 94 ford 4.0 and they will bring up the part for about 300 to 400 dollars. Also i have 1050 reasons i am right.

yep, my book is wrong. I called Oreilly. They show the part for 1994-1995, $206.95.

I am going to get with Chiltons and see what is up.

Thanks for the correct information.

Joe

no problem, you got me worried about that for a second
thinking i was ripped off.... whewwwww.

but professional injector cleaning? and what else? Please!

IMHO - you WERE taken for a ride - $1,050.00 worth of a ride.

CPS alone costs about $200.00. You could get new (take-offs) injectors from Ford MotorSport for about $120.00 (8 injectors).

Ping? most people drive till engine dies. I wouldn't worry about it. Do you think that if you trade your "X" for abother vehicle that you're gonna get rid of the problem? wake-up - every vehicle needs something done or fixed sooner or later.

well they quoted me 700, they said 400 for the part 200 for labor dignostics was around 100 the the celaning was about 100, it was not my choice to take it to the ford place my father did most of the choosing after he got the car back he felt he made the wrong choice and offered to pay 550 of the 1050 so i ended up paying 500 (still a good amount for a college student) i could not tell you exactly what was on the bill because i did not see it all the figures i gave yall came from what they quoted me.

oh yeah dont forget to include taxes theres about another 80 dollars
